Re: Set Timing on 1964 Comet w/ 200
Thanks fellas. I'm going to take another look at it this weekend and see if I can get it tuned a little better. I should clarify the car isn't overheating. It's just getting hotter than I'd normally expect sitting in the hot Florida sun at stop lights. I have already replaced the heater core, thermo...

Set Timing on 1964 Comet w/ 200
Hi everyone! I need some advice on ignition timing in my 1964 Mercury Comet. I have what I believe to be a 200 6 cylinder (5 frost plugs) w/ two speed automatic transmission that I have given a tune up but seem to be overheating a bit now. I don't think I have it timed correctly. I know you typicall...

Re: Strange Battery Drain Issue
Well I let the car sit until this morning and checked my voltage. Still sitting at 12.62 volts. I think my issue was a combination of two things: 1. Lack of knowledge that a battery needs time to cool down after an initial charge to get an accurate reading. 2. My incorrect assumption the battery dra...

Re: Strange Battery Drain Issue
My first thought would be not to worry. You say you have 12.6 volts and that is what a 12 V battery should be. 2.1 volts per cell. As for tracking any possible drain, I would take all the fuses out but 1 and let it sit then monitor your voltage drop over a given time frame. Do that for each circuit...

Re: 1964 Comet Caliente Convertible - Quebec to So Florida
I saw a new aftermarket evap on CL this morning. Somewhere on the peninsula. He bought it and it wouldn't fit, $75. And after installing the AC in mine I wondered whether it was worth it. In the summer I like driving with the top up and the back glass unzipped, windows down, crotch coolers open. Th...

Re: 1964 Comet Caliente Convertible - Quebec to So Florida
Blue motors came out in 66. I think the 64's were black block & argent/silver v. cover & breather. I know some of the earlier ones were this color but not positive about 64's. in 65 the 200's were black block & yellow v.c. & breather. Well almost :P '64 144 yellow VC, 170 red VC, 200 cream VC, all ...

.I like the little 6cyl.....you ought to get many miles out of that little comet And I promise not to go on a rant about the engine being blue, well maybe Canadian '64s had blue 170s :P  mostly because the Comet is so nice. See Ya, Mike I did some digging and found this is actually a 200. It h...

Re: Identification numbers
The stamp tag is there but....sometime in the past someone did some kind of grinding on the door where the tag is. I am not 100% sure of the first 2 numbers and first letter [7 6 D ] I also have a Canadian Comet. My 1964 Comet Caliente Convertible was built in Oakville, Canada. It has a VIN code of...

Re: 1964 Comet Caliente Convertible - Quebec to So Florida
I guess they are getting a tad cheaper this time of year. they usually bring 200 or more depending on the condition of it. I just put one in my car that has nice chrome & a working blower motor & it was a little over 300 + shipping. I wont know if it leaks until I gas it up. I have another one that...

Re: 1964 Comet Caliente Convertible - Quebec to So Florida
Welcome. You found yourself a really nice looking Comet! The colors go well for South Florida. I would say that with the 170 you will use about 25% of the horsepower to turn the compresser. To minimize the draw use a rotary style compresser not a piston type. Mercury offered an underdash unit for t...
