Beautiful car! really nice! :D That is an 8'' rear but still plenty tuff, & is one of the more beefier 8'' center sections with the waffle pattern /extra webbing.

If it is the original motor the 5th letter in the vin will tell which it is, c is 210 HP 2 barrel & A is 225 hp 4 barrel.

Your tag in the pic says 4sp, if you look on the mercury stuff code chart above. but if you mean which 4 sp you can look & see on the driver side of it, & if you see bolts around a cover it is a T10 & will look like this

If you just see smooth around the shift shafts it is a toploader & looks like this

For the rear end- you might get away with removing the third member (pumpkin, chunk, the big ol' heavy leaking part in the middle) and changing the gasket between it and the housing.
It also looks like the pinion seal is leaking, and possibly the drain plug on the side. When you remove the drain plug with a 3/8" ratchet make sure you use thread sealant when you put it back in.
For the pinion seal it requires removing the pinion housing from the 3rd member, disassembling it to change the seal and reassembling it with a new seal and crush collar. You may want to have a shop do it. If the rears making noise you may want to do a complete rebuild of the 3rd member. Install new wheel bearings as well.

Thanks Joe!
I may try and tackle the rear end myself.

Pops is right. The pinon seal is the hard one. Just incase you don't know. Don't go tighting in the crap out of the housing bolts tring to get it to stop leaking it can warp the mating surface. I would check them to see if they are tight or missing though.

Good luck, Matt

You guys are pretty dam nice... I will check the bolts and let a rear end shop look at it. I am eventually going to go through the whole car, my priorities are currently anything that leaks...and I have a few.

If you decide to tackle the rear end it's really not too bad. You'll need a few special tools.
Ratech sells 8" rebuild kits and a cool spacer/shim kit that replaces the crush collar.
I believe there are a couple threads here about rebuilding the 8" chunk.
