1965 Comet durability challenge

Post by Jimmyk514 »

In 1965 three mercury comets traveled from Cape Horn, South America to Fairbanks, Alaska. For a durability challenge. All three cars were Aquamarine. Does anyone have any idea how to go abound getting the VIN numbers for those three cars? I know it's silly but I purchased a red comet that one we started removing the paint we determined it was formerly aquamarine and it had an offset stipe exactly like the marketing brochures.

Wouldn't that be a find!!
I sure hope you got one of them. Pulling some paint off the doors and the rear quarter's might tell you more. I sure would try to save what's under there if it is one of them. Not sure if that is possible??

I would think those three Comets would have had a LOT of specialized, beefed up equipment on them. Do you see any evidence of that? I just happen to have this old magazine add hanging on my office wall.

A very long time ago one was in the Harrah's collection in Reno. I wanted to crawl under the ropes to look at it! All those cars were sold many years ago to who knows where?
