The falcons in the early years didn't come with factory installed ac and it sounds like the comets may not have either. Most were dealer installed with the dealer moving the evap' as close to the dash as possible.
That comet in the post looks like the shifter is very close to hitting. But that's an easy fix with a hot knife just heat the bottom of the shift handle and bend slightly. That's what i did with mine and no harm done and you don't even see the blackened area from the heat as the boot hides it all.
To move the evap' forward i just cut and rewelded the mount brackets so they are further forward and just as solid and the evap just almost touches the heater box.
