1964 K Code Caliente Brake Overhaul

Post by jas280z »

I am trying to figure out what brake drums, wheel cylinders, etc... I need for an overhaul on a new to us 1964 K code Caliente Convertible. The usual suspects (Autozone, Advance Auto) don't seem to have much available, and I don't trust that their system will have the right parts for these cars.

We are still in the process of getting the car delivered, so I can't take any actual measurements on the car.

Mac's auto parts is right down the road, so they will likely have what I am looking for, but I don't completely trust them to be able to tell me what specific parts I need either.

Per page 2-20 of the 1964 shop manual, I need the following for an 8 cylinder non-station wagon:

-Front Wheel Cylinder Bore Diameter, 1.125"
-Rear Wheel Cylinder Bore Diameter, 0.906"
-Drum Diameter, 10.0"

Unfortunately, that doesn't really narrow it down too much.

Mac's lists these as potential front drums. None of them list 1964 Comets, but they list 1964 Falcons and 1965 Comets:

http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_falco ... ntego.html

I'm thinking the first link is correct, 2 1/4", anyone know for certain?

These appears to be the correct shoes, especially if the 2 1/4" drum is correct:

For rear drums, these are the options:

I'm thinking the second link, 1 3/4", is correct. Again can anyone confirm?

If the second link is correct, then these would appear to be the correct brake shoes:

Interestingly, both sets of shoes list V8 1964 comet.

These appear to be the correct wheel cylinders:

http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_falco ... ntego.html
http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_falco ... right.html
http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_falco ... -left.html

These are the hardware kits I think I need:

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I ditched drum brakes so I can't help you there, but really the only way to know is to look at the parts you currently have on the car. Who knows what has been changed or swapped in over the years. From the factory these cars where known to have variations. If they ran out of a part they'd substitute another.

And while you're at it install a Power brake booster

part # 9782PB2. It works great! VIEW page 89.

Thanks for the confirmation. A front disc swap, and power boost/two pot MC will be happening eventually. We have a Cougar to finish first before digging too deep into the Comet.
