COMET CENTRAL

MY 63 (original 6 cyl manual trans) has the clutch pedal still in the car after the switch to an AOD trans. The pedal is flat against the firewall and under the carpet.
I have a problem with the brake pedal returning all the way up. It stops about an inch short. I can pull it up with my foot. I see there is a return spring on the clutch brake shaft. Not sure if this is the problem.

I would like to get the clutch pedal out of the car. Is there a replacement shaft that would just hold the brake pedal in place?

To remove the clutch pedal and keep the existing brake pedal just pull the shaft, fab a spacer similar to the top end of the pedal to keep it located as with the pedal. You could easily fab a new plate for the pedal to fit an auto pedal pad and weld it onto existing pedal.

Like Ron said you should be able to pull the shaft and put a spacer but I don't think the clutch pedal being there would cause the brake not to rise all the way because mostly it just pivots on the shaft and the spring on the clutch lever arm lifts the pedal.

I have an original auto trans brake pedal from a 64 if you're interested. They should be the same.

Had a friend who used his with the clutch pedal pushed against the floor with the carpet over it to hide it. He never had any problem with it that way.

Well there's a right way to do things and a wrong way. That's clearly not the right way.
It ain't that hard to find the right parts. The pedal bracket is the same between auto and standard trans cars. A pedal swap would take maybe an hour.

I wouldn't do it that way but have seen it done. I would either get the right pedal or at least remove the pedal and fab' a spacer in its' place.

Yep, on this forum, you would think the extra supply of auto brake pedals laying around FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Got the brake pedal from comethead installed. I think we found the problem of the rear brakes locking up.
Three things
Rear breaks had wrong shoe on leading side. They were full length material on the shoe just like the trailing shoe. Put on new shoes, new adjuster kit and all new hardware.
The wheels were hitting the balance weights on the outside of the drums causing the wheel to be on cattywampus. This also wore the inside of the drum uneven. Corrected by grinding the weight and turning the drum on the lathe.
The rear center brake hose was collapsing inside preventing the brake fluid from going back. Picking up hew hose tomorrow from NAPA

Hope this solves my brake problems
