front disc brake conversion on 65 comet,with power brakes

Post by navychief »

Anyone do this conversion ? looks like it will be a tight fit putting a duel master cyl on the brake booster, limited room.

It can be done with a dual reservoir and a mini-booster from ABS brakes in CA. I believe they have a small 7" booster.

Power brakes are not really needed if you put on disc brakes. I have manual disc kit from csrp the 4 piston kelsey hayes type & they feel like power brakes almost, but with better feel of the road.& I'm not alone, most everyone who gets them says the same thing.

If you go with the power brakes and dual mc, you're probably going to need to replace your factory shock tower braces with an export brace to get enough room.

I am considering the front disc brakes and not using the booster ,I agree the disc brake set up should do the job . I will keep you'll posted on the progress ,thank you ,Wayne

Wayne I also have manual discs on my 65. It takes a little more pedal effort than when it had power drums but nothing extrodinary. Good luck!

I went with the CSRP manual kit also and it definitely does not feel like a modern power brake system but even driving hills I do not have a problem. I also have the manual rack and pinion steering which is a bummer in parking lots due to the increased turning radius.

I got the power brake kit from mp brakes .the kit has almost everything I need . One question, being that I am going from power brakes to manual and removing the brake booster will I need an adapter to mount the new master cyl to the firewall ? thanks

I remember Comethead joe went from factory PB's to manual. Maybe he will chime in & explain but I think he had to weld in a small plate on the firewall. he mentions it here in this thread;
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1999&hilit=factory+ ... ual+brakes
if so maybe it could be glued in with panel adhesive if it is just sandwiched in between?

I stand corrected...huh, I didn’t think there was a diff other than the extra holes - memory fades!! :lol: :roll:

Exactly memory fades! I forget what I had to do. :shock:
I’ll check my car and post up. I believe the booster assy sets lower then just a MC mounted to the firewall. The MC mount holes are there because of the pedal bracket mount bolts. But the brake pedal pin is higher for the MB setup.

Be right back with more details...

Edit- So you’ll need a brake pedal with the higher pin location for the MC pushrod. The stock booster sits lower. I welded a small filler patch to cover the hole left by the booster.
If you can’t find a 65 MB pedal (it has to be 65 because the pedal pin is large for the pedal mounted brake light switch) you can either modify yours to work or find a 63-64 pedal to modify. I used a 64 MB pedal and I welded in the brake pedal pin from Mustang Steve https://www.mustangsteve.com/product/brake-pin/

If you look at that mustang booster on that link Joe put up, here it is;
https://www.mustangsteve.com/product/booster-65/
If you look at both sides of that booster I think you'll get an idea of what the firewall will need. the big hole in the center is in between the 2 studs on the MC side & below & above the 4 studs on the firewall side. in addition to the pedal pin that Joe mentioned.

Here is a better explanation with 2000 words worth of pics. :lol:

your firewall, if it is factory Power brakes, will have holes in to accommodate a booster like this ;

& will need to accommodate this type MC now;
