61...144cid engine 'head' install questions

Post by 61 Waycrosscomet »

Got the 61 head back from machine shop. not much work needed on it.
Looking for Tips and tricks for re-installing head.
I have made some guide bolts so gasket and head stay lined up when lowered.

My new gasket is from Fel Pro, hope they make good gaskets. Let me know if not.
New gasket says use 'no sealant' on it.

Reusing original bolts, only replacement ones I found looked thinner and were longer. Machine shop said original bolts are ok to reuse.

Installing exhaust manifold first before 'head' installation.

shop manual said to apply water resistant stuff to bolts that will be on right side of head. Not sure what sealant to use here. (??)

thanks all.

good idea to make pilot bolts to align head on install, even heavier with exh. mfld.
.
'machine shop did a valve job? - did they mill head surface?. Amount if milled known, will help calculate engine compression ratio.
.
unless HiPo , clean original head bolts shouldn't be a problem if re-used (imho)

.
front head bolt by water pump needs sealant. Blue Loctite or similar should work - Head gaskets should not have additional sealant although gasket treatmentis often used. A preference is a light 'copper spray'. Keep RTV away from any automotive use unless spec'd for oil resistance...

.
good to hear of another 4 MAIN small block six surviving.
.
'63 Wagon has a Maverick 170 4 MAIN block with a refurb'd '77 head at @ 9.5:1 compression . The OEM original thin steel head gaskets are often available - but only for the smaller bore 144/170 and not 200/250.

The machine shop did mill the head, but he said it was extremely small. fractional what they milled.
hopefully that won't affect engine performance.

for CR calculating it would be good for the machine shop to provide milling info, measuring head chambers can be done also if at all concerned.

basically modern head gaskets are thicker and can lower CR slightly.

... measuring with Marvel Mystery adds nice minty aroma 8) .
