Welding up holes

Post by Loner »

The man that taught me how to do body and fender work has been at it for 65 years now. One thing I learned from him when welding is to use wet asbestos next to the weld to help stop the steel from distorting. It works very well. You still have to slap a wet sponge to the steel to shrink it back, but it is a lot more work getting the steel back right with out it.
I wonder if there is something else I can use. Asbestos is bad stuff. There must be something on the market that will do the same thing but I can't seem to find any info on the net and the guys at the paint store never herd of such, go figure.

Here's my trunk lid. I welded up the holes in it the other day. You can get a idea of what I'm talking about.

Heat Fence. It is like play dough, a putty/paste. Works great.

I use a blow gun to cool the weld with air after.

Thanks Lou I knew there had to be something.
Another guy told me he uses drywall mud.

The stuff is reusable too! I just scoop up the moist stuff with a spreader when done and put it back in the container.
