1965 gas tank sending unit rubber seal

I installed my new sending unit with the tank in the car. The rubber seal leaked big time. When I removed it I noticed that it looks too large. It is difficult to hold the seal in place since it is facing partially down. I put some aviation Permatex on the groove on the tank to help hold it in place but since I did not have the location tabs adjusted to easily fit into the slots I had to struggle with it. Any hints on installing? Anyone gotten the wrong rubber seal? Thanks.

I put in a new sender once & it came with a new lock ring. leaked. so I used the old lock ring, sand blasted the rust off it first. it didnt leak then.

I coat the seal with wheel bearing grease to hold it in place during install. I have gotten senders with seals that were too large. If the old seal was ok, not hard or torn I would just reuse the old one. If the old one wasn't good I would go get one the correct size.

Thanks John and Lou. Took both your suggestions and it worked great.
