64 1/4 panels

Post by SASSY »

No unfortunatly I'm not producing new 64 1/4s from original molds
but I do have some answers after what I have done.
I took 64 Comet front fenders and sectioned them into the back of my
Caliente, but because of the size of the tire (275/60s) I had to lengthen
them about 3 inches. The problem I had was the damage to the 1/4
extended above the major body line. On the frt fender the shape of the
concave above that body line changes over the length of the fender.
I tried everything but I couldn't get it just right only close.
If I had it to do over I would find a pair of hardtop doors (ever notice
they hardly rust) and use it as a repair panel because the concave is the
same as the 1/4 and the door is long. At that point you could use a 4dr
wheel opening or whatever because the door panel would give you
a smooth solid place to work from.
Just an idea.

Fred, just saw this old post. Do you have any close up pictures of your rear wheel wells? I never thought of going this route. Is the front wheel opening a close match to the rear?

Fred, I have been looking around at some pictures. I like your idea. Looks great. Not exact match but very good. I think this idea could help alot of people as donor quarters are becoming very hard to find.

Sorry Boss never seen your post.
I like my wheel opening on big tires more than stock one.
I just roled the sail of the panel till I liked the lines and made a horizontal
Joint to the inner instead of the stock vertical.
The good thing about using doors is falcons work.
Beware, its a ton of work! The inner has to be reworked to meet the new outer lines.

Am I to understand that the pic of "Fred's Comet" has front fender lips grafted to the rear wheel wells? That look is amazing! Details, details! Pics, pics! I have a 64 hardtop in need of rear wheel lip repair in the future and a solid set of fenders, I might add. And both cars look great.

Hey dan, my quarters were way bad way back in the 70s.
There are early pics of them in the Showing Off section in the thread Let Me Start.
In "02 I repainted the car and changed the openings.
I located a pair of good front fenders, cut them as long as possible and length wise in the lower cove.
Sectioned them into the quarter placing the front of the opening about a half inch from the tire.
I had to cut the back half of the opening out and move it back 3 inches for looks.
As i stated the work is getting the wheel tub to fit.
