302 engine

Post by hotrodron »

Hey guys, I have problem ID ing my engine. I bought my 65 comet approx 4 months ago . the car runs drives great, just want to do improvements Etc. so Its mine.I cannot find any cast or id #'s anywhere. nothing by distributor or behind the starter. according to past owner its a 96 302 Ford crate motor. It has a AOD tranny. Any info ? is it a roller motor? how can I tell? Thanks. Ron

Pull a valve cover. There might be an id number in there somewhere. Post some pictures if you can. The only surefire way I know to determine whether its a roller cam engine is to pull the intake manifold.

Thanks for the reply! there is nothing under around starter, which I replaced, just stippled? casting as on rest of block This 302 is crate motor w/ aluminum SVO heads. I guess I'll have to pull the intake. Any other ideas? Thanks....Ron

If you have a bore scope type of camera you could pull the distributer and look through that opening.

And the numbers won't be cast, they'll be stamped.

If its a roller cam you'll either see the factory type dog bone lifter retainers or link bar style lifters. If not you'll see regular old flat tappet lifters tops.

IIRC the late-later block markings were largely on the driver side...may be the same for FRPP crate engines.
'cause Johno says you gotta have a sig pic! :)
