Hello All. I have recently purchased a 68 mustang that appears to have a 1964 289 hipo in it. The PO said it was out of a comet. The vin stamped on the block is hard to read but appears to be 4J23K521221 but the 23 might be a 27. Can anyone help with identfying block. Interested in what it could have come out of. Block# is C4OE-6015-F. I know nothing about comets but am very interested in them. Also i was told comets hipos didnt exist. Thanks

Not many and IIRC they were all dealer installed. K code didn't mean the same thing in Comets as 'Stangs...not the 271HP motor. The heads, balancer, exhaust manifolds, and carb (if the original is still present) are good/easy ways to at least get some semblance of an idea on if it's a HiPo.

Its def a hipo has:
Bobweight on crank
3/8 studs on rods
2 piece camshaft retainer
Vin on block
Thick balancer
Hipo water pump
Mech advance dual point distributor. Etc

Thanks

I guess my question is not verifying its a hipo but what kind of comets came with the hipos. Would the vin have a 23 or 27 in it. The car came from California last year. Thanks

For 64 VIN code 23 was 2 door hardtop Caliente and 27 was hardtop Cyclone. Either could have been special ordered with a 289 Hipo. Not many were.
Probably same old story...cool old Comet was parted out to transfer the drive train to a Mustang.

HAS anyone ever heard of a 289 special ?? I have one ,have owned it for way over 30 odd yrs,it has a 5bolt block,it came from a 64 fairlane wagon with every option offered back then....had a sticker on VC's ,289 special,,have had it in a 71f100,64 mustang,63 falcon and is in a 71 bronco today,,the only thing special so far is the length of the valve springs and where the retainers go..I found a listing on it in an old ford repair manual one time,,but not much more...

Hey Pop,
In Bob Mannels small block book he says that some 64 Fairlanes with the 2V 289 had a “289 Special” sticker on the valve covers. They were just like the other 289 2V engines but got the dress up stickers.
They also called the 289 Challenger and Super Cyclone. Marketing.

thanks JOE,, I said valve springs,I meant to say, valve stems,,shortly after I got it ,I installed in a 71 f100,,shortly after,it jumped time and bent 7 valves,,,it took several engine shops to find them, the location of the keepers were closer to the end thus having a longer stem just by a bit, compared to a reg 289 valve stem,,,like I said I still have this 289 special, heads and all..I rebuilt once and had the heads redone once,,,still runs good,,,,or it did last time it was started....and it did come as a 2bbl from the factory ,I think I might still have the orginal intake ,,as It has a 4bbl on it now........thanks again.....take care post me a picture of those 2 kids,,bet they are pretty grown up by now...pop

Where exactly on the block should the VIN stamping be found? My 64 Caliente HT has a 5 bolt 289 which is fitted with a 2-barrel carb and cannot be original to the car (VIN tells me it came with a 260 from the factory), am trying to find out what I have.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Cheers,

T

I don’t think Foooord started stamping partial VIN’s on anything BUT the HiPo’s until ‘68’ish. HiPo’s VIN’s were stamped on the pass side (IIRC by the neg. bat cable attachment toward the bottom of the block). On later stuff the partial VIN was on a flat behind the rear China wall.

You should have block casting and date codes though. The 5-bolt 289’s were only run until like mid-’65 so that already narrows it down!

Thanks, I'll have to check when the car is back from the guy who is doing the type approval here in Austria. Not that helps a lot, but that's what it looks like.
