Vibration Damper / Harmonic Balancer
Vibration Damper / Harmonic Balancer
What is the best way to determine if damper is defective? Will a visual inspection be enough? What should I look for? What are the symptoms ? The engine is installed in the car so it is difficult to see it very well. Thank you in advance for the help.

Check that the rubber between the inner and outer pieces has not deteriorated and allowed the two sections two slip or seperate.Check that the two sections are even with each other, use a straight edge. The balance weight is part of the center section attached the the crank snout so you should not have any vibrations. You should be able to check these with the balancer installed! Re: Vibration Damper / Harmonic Balancer
Start it up, if it wobbles its junk. If the rubber and cracked and sticking out or has parts missings its junk. You can pull#1 plug, stick a screw driver in the hole and bring it up to TDC (when you cant feel any more movement in the screw driver, its not completely accurate) but if your balancer is showing up like 10-15 ATDC then its probably safe to say its junk.
