Fuel Tank 65 Comet

Post by kayos »

hello volks!

now my car is running with a 351W after 1 year working on it....

but the next problem seems to be a leck in the gas tank...

now my question will fit a tank from a 65 mustang? i only know that my tank has a capacity of 20 gal.

:?:

tanks a lot

greets tom

Pretty sure that would be a no.

I am not sure if '65s are like '64s but the only ones of those available (as far as I know) are from crites in fiberglass.

Don't know anything about the fiberglass ones, but the mustang fuel tank will fit.

I just bought one of these repro tanks for my 64 Caliente for $299.99. Just arrived yesterday and it looks like a perfect match to my original. I also bought a new sending unit lock ring and gasket set. I'll be Putting it in next week which will be better than constantly applying multiple patches in my old one and being afraid of blowing up as I cruise down the highway.

I believe the mustang tank will fit the width. The comet tank may be longer so a blank filler panel may be needed to fill the void. You can probaby use a 69 mustang tank for a capacity of 20 gal or a 70 for 22 gal. It will sit taller in the trunk so you could add a plywood or masonite cover over it for protection. Or fab a sheetmetal cover from the old tank.

Good to know the repro tank looks like a perfect match!! About time an exact fit reproduction became available.
Thanks for the update.

I bought that new repro tank and sending unit/lock ring last year and it all worked like a charm. One of the few times a project has gone without a single hitch....The Gods must have been smiling on me that day.....lol

Does anyone know what kind of sealant I need to buy that goes around the base of the tank where you bolt it in the trunk?

Thanks

I bought strip sealant/calk from an auto parts store. It was the only thing I could find that looked like the old stuff that was used before. I also added a ground strap from the tank to the body to insure a good ground for the sending unit. That was the only problem I had when I installed a new tank and sending unit.

It works like a champ now and the gauge actually works like it did when it was new. Granted, that was after installing several sending units which did not work as they should have. Several new sending units would only show the tank half to three quarters full after a fill up.

That drove me crazy not knowing how much gas was really in the tank. Good luck with your project. You will be glad you did it.
