That year would be a 28 oz balance. If you remove the inspection cover and can see the converter nuts and be able measure across them, you can sometimes tell that way. I don't know that you'll be able to get across them though with it still assembled. I think the smaller flexplate is about 10 1/2 " and the larger one is 11 1/2 ". Just going by memory though. Mark

Mike, Looking at your pics I thought I saw an old round top single-chamber brake master on the firewall, then I think I saw a dual chamber master in a later photo. Did you swap out and upgrade? I did that in my 66 F100 truck for safety - if something fails on either the front or back system, it get isolated by the proportioning valve and you'll still get pressure to the other half. I was planning on doing that in my 'new' 62 Comet S-22 as well but it looks too tight a space to accommodate the longer two chamber master. How'd this work out for you? Did you put a proportioning valve in it as well? If I remember right, I bought a master and valve for a 66 Mustang last time - seems like the way to go for a Comet as well.
Les

Nevermind - went back and looked at the pics again and saw you detailed what you did in other photos - disks up front!

Les, I put a dual master cylinder in my 63 when I added the disc brakes to the front. I used a disc/drum master cylinder from a 67 mustang with a proportioning valve on the back. As it turns out, for my application, I ended up leaving it all the way open. ??? The room was ok for it, but I also have the removable struts to the firewall. That makes it a lot easier. Mark

Yes, it has a dual master now.. It was part of the CSRP bolt on disc brake swap..

Ok, so we replaced the flex plate and the starter.., and the car starts great..

We determined it was 157 tooth, and 10.5 torque converter bolt.. and it definitely had an external balance..

But it is out of balance.. I bought a 28 oz flex plate.. When we were assembling it, Kevin told me the motor has a 1 piece rear main seal, which says to me it is a 5.0, not a 302? Do I have the wrong flex plate? the vibration is big as soon as it gets above idle.. I am not driving it until we figure this out..

picture of the flex plate we removed..

Any ideas?

I think they went to a 50 oz around 1985. probably be a good idea to look behind the starter while you have it out for an engine code & date code. It may help with future parts shopping too. the good news is your motor is newer than you thought. which is also the bad news

You could also see what balance the balancer is on the front. Good info to know.

Hey Mark/383Merc, Where am I looking in the front? I want to check that out before I order a part tomorrow.. I'm tired of talking to the computer morons at the local parts stores..

RC,,the balancer is on the front of the motor with the lower pully bolted to it,it's big HUB looking thing,it has your timing marks on it,you need one that is balanced to your flywheel.......pop

So drop the pulley? Will it have markings announcing what it is, or is it something I need to figure out? Parts places around here are worthless..

TAKE the belt(s) off ,use a 9/16th socket short ext, take the bolts out and if don't just fall ,take a hammer and peck it off, then use a 15/16th socket and take the end bolt out of the end of the crank, then use a puller and take the balancer off,it's keyed and it won't go back together but one way.......more than likely the pully will have 4 bolts,,some cases the fan needs to be removed.......POP

Here is a link to a picture of both the 28 oz and 50 oz balancers. Notice the thick area is larger on the 50 oz compared to the 28 oz. This is from the back. You can probably tell without taking it off.
