New Carburetor for 64 Mercury Comet 202 with 6cyl 170.

Post by comet1268 »

Hey folks,
I have a 64 Comet 202 with 6cyl 170 cu in. I just installed Pertronix electronic ignition and it is fabulous. Now on to other matters. I want to replace the original Ford single barrel with a new carb. I figured I would go straight to the experts and ask...... Do ya'll have any recommendations? The car is completely stock and I'm not looking to be a street racer. I would simply like a replacement that gets me back to a reliable tool-around-town ride. I researched and found this from Summit:

I figured someone would have some good experience with options.

Thanks,
Jason

Your choices are limited. You can't just install any one barrel as the early engines used a special carb with a vacuum output control for the dist timing. If you upgrade the dist to 66 or later dist then you can use any carb and doesn't need the special vac output. The later carbs get their timing output vacuum from a normal throttle plate output port.

Maybe you can get you current carb rebuilt back to factory specs? Here is an option: http://www.kpcarbs.net/home.html. I haven't used KP but hear he does good work.

Wow thanks for the responses. It would be nice to hang on to my original carb and have it rebuilt. That price is pretty reasonable too......plus warranted for as long as you own your car. Nice.

Hey ya'll. I wanted to follow up on this post with my outcome. I took previous advice and sent my original autolite 1100 carb up to Kurt at KP carbs and he did a bang up job on mine. I plopped it on the intake and it fired up within a couple turns of the engine. It came back beautiful and freshly anodized like new. I made a couple adjustments and I'm running like new. I highly recommend him. It took about a month all said and done. Total was as advertised on the site including about $10 return shipping. Thanks for the advice...........
