qUESTION ON MOTOR MOUNTS

Post by thos25 »

I just experienced an unexpected failure of one of my motor mounts( left side I think) on my 1965 COMET CYCLONE resulting in an unwanted meeting between my fan and radiator. The radiator lost, resulting in a trashed radiator. I certainly was not revving the engine or racing; in fact the tach read less than 2 grand when I heard the huge noise. I had just pulled away from a stop light. A fellow FORD fan told me that FORD made a major change on MUSTANG motor mounts in 66 for this very reason. My mounts are the early three piece type. Will the later MUSTANG mounts fit my COMET? Has anyone experienced a similar scenario?
Thanks and Kind Regards, TOM

Driver side mount? You can convert to the later mount but I don't know if they're any stronger. What kinda shape were yours in? IMO your best bet is to pin them:

Here some info on Bird/ Comet/ 'Stangs and a place you can buy 'em:

I broke a fairly new motor mount as well. But it wasn't catastrophic. It would shudder and shake in reverse.
When I got new mounts I pinned them and the problem went away.

I believe the later style mounts in stock form are stronger. If you look at the isolator it uses a through bolt to hold it down. Something the early mounts don't do.
Also, Ford eliminated having separate mounts for 289 Hipo and non-Hipo in 66, prior to that the Hipo had its own mounts and isolators (big bucks today). So they were confident enough in the new system to use on the Hipo and Shelby's.

I believe I read that the 66 style mounts raises the engine a little in Comets and Falcons.
