Building My Second 64 Comet

Post by gotyurback »

I bought this 64 comet 3 months ago missing the bumpers, drivetrain, and rear end as a parts cars for 100.00 without a title. Since then I have secured a title for the comet and decided to build it.

I built a bolt on triangulated 4 link with adjustable coil over shocks

Installed a mustang II

Installed a 4.6 DOHC engine

Currently working on rust repair in the floors. I probably will expand the inner wheel well 2" to get bigger tires under it.

Hey! Recognize the username from some other site,, welcome back. See you joined years ago.
This build looks even wilder than the black car.

Chasing Classic Cars?? Wayne seems OK...really like his Dad. There's some debate about the legitimacy of remaining Safari Comets... I don't know but I would say without a VIN list of those that went and a definitive match +'other junk....be cautious!!! :D

A coworker about 10 years ago knew that I was building my 1967 mustang, he asked me it I would like to have a Ford Tilt Steering column that he kept from his uncle's mustang. So of course I told him yes because I never owned a Ford tilt steering column, I have a swing-away column from my galaxie but I have never owned a tilt ford column. Recently I decided that I would use it in this 64 Comet build. After removing all the vacuum and solenoid parts from the column, it tilted and it would not lock back into place so I thought it was broken and went with an aftermarket tilt column. One day I'm watching Fantom works and the velocity channel and they were restoring a 1970 Shelby 500 and there it was a steering column just like the one that my coworker gave to me, come to find out the solenoid is wired into the door light switch and when you open the door to get out of the car the solenoid activates a rod that tilts the steering wheel up and towards the passenger side making it easier to exit the car, and the vacuum canister that mount onto the column pulls the rod back into locking place once you start the car up which will allow the steering wheel to lock back to the center of the column. I test the solenoid and the vacuum canister and everything works like a charm, I almost gave it away because I thought it was broken.

I am using the same steering column in my '64. I removed the column from a '67 Cougar 30 some years ago. I ditched the vacuum system and now use a solenoid to actuate the tilt away feature. Another column I have that works well is from a '69 Lincoln, but they are rare.
