One of the Mercury managers running the Safari Comet show was Fran Hernandez (he joined Mercury when Ford acquired Autolite where he was a tech rep). He's dead now but his sons have a FB page dedicated to their dad and all the stuff he did at Mercury including the Safari.
I believe it was there that I read that all but one of the Safari Comets were left in Africa after the race because 1) they were hammered beyond use and 2) Mercury had issues with customs trying to ship them back to the US. I read that they were stored in a warehouse in Kenya and left to rot.
The one that came back did the Mercury auto show circuit with a few cars painted up as imposters to simulate the "Safari Team".

I was thinking about expanding the tubs, but I test fitted my Ranchero 9" wide spare wheel with a +12 offset and a 255 tire under the comet and it fit with 1 1/2" to spare on the outer side and 1 3/4" to the inside of the wheel well, so that's enough rim for me

Since this is a restomod, I was able to get a staggered set of wheels to fit the mustang II front and the triangulated four link rear. 18x8 front wheel and 20x10 rear wheel. I tested the multi-spoke wheel 1st and decided to use the 5 spoke wheel on the comet and the multi-spoke wheel on my galaxie
