Headliner

Post by fair67 »

Hello Again
I am trying to figure out how the headliner connects to the car above and behind the rear window on our 65 Comet 404. We got the car with no headliner and who knows what is missing it does have all the bows and if you look at the metal Aluminum color piece above the drivers door I think we may need something like that around the rear window. However I am not sure The metal piece has square plastic tabs that hold it in place. On the rear window I can see holes for the plastic tabs but no metal piece to hold the headliner in. Can anyone help by telling me what is missing and what I need even better yet a picture. Any and all help appreciated.

I have not replaced my (missing) headliner yet in my 1965 404, but I can see pieces of the headliner sticking out from the rear window trim. I believe I have heard that you must actually remove the rear window and install the headliner, then re-install the rear window in order to hold the headliner in place in back.

Luke,
I don't recall if you put a headliner in your Fairlane? If so, it's the same way with the Comet. I put a headliner in my Fairlane and that knowledge will help out as I am putting a fabric headliner in my '64 Comet. My Comet had the cardboard panels. Not a fan of that. the rear window must come out and the fabric is folded over the opening edge. Then the back window and seal.

I think I was confused on my original answer. I was talking about the rear window as in the one above the trunk. From your pics it looks like you mean the rear seat side windows.

My headliner is currently out, so I will check my own 404 when I get home and get back to you about whether I have any pieces you don't.

My wife and I actually did both our Fairlane headliners the 67 GT and our 67 500 the thing is that this one looks different then the Fairlanes. The Fairlanes used windlace along the rear quarter window and above the door. The Comet looks to have sharks teeth above the front door and it kinda looks like the sharks teeth should go to the rear quarter window too (or something) because it has the square tab holes to hold it in. I wonder if the 64 and 65 comets are the same or not you mention card board pieces and I definately have none. I for sure see what you are saying about the rear window having to come out both our Fairlanes had to remove rear window. All I know is if this was a 67 Fairlane I would have no problem but this looks a little different thank you very much for the reply. It would be much easier if someone didnt tear out the Headliner before we bought the car. By the way Lyndsey and Janet made door panels and painted all the rear trim. We are making rear deck now and board behind the seat. We are waiting for pictures from anoNY42 with hopes of shedding more light on this.

Well, I don't have anything above the rear side windows either. I'm not sure how much that means since my car has not had a headliner since I bought it, though.

We are still figuring out the headliner but in the meantime my daughter sanded down the front inside doors while I was at work yesterday. My wife kept an eye on her they also made and painted a rear deck board. Now also did the interior trim we had removed and the door panels wife and daughter made. This only means that soon we will have to tackle that headliner. LOL.
