Re: My first 1964 Caliente/Comet project
I didn't feel like putting a fiberglass teardrop Hood on the car so I thought I'd just make a teardrop Hood from scratch using 18 gauge steel. I still need to put the vent holes and wire in the back end but I think it turned out fairly well. Sorry for not posting more but retirement is hopefully just around the corner LOL

Thanks Joe. Time wise it took around 36-40 hours. The radius on top part of the scoop changes about every two or three inches but if it didn't I guess it wouldn't have a little bit of rake to it. I made this out of eight separate pieces, welded them and planish them by hand.Joe Travers wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 1:20 pmThat's what I call the patience of Job

Sure you can! Trust me, if I can do it you can too. The drive, time, and tools is what it takes, oh, and watching a lot of how to videos lolJims65cyclone wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2023 9:39 pmWow! That's another thing I know l never be able to do.

I made the hood out of 18 gauge steel so it would be rigid enough and not need any extra support.
I will cut out the shape I need on the old hood and tig weld the scoop in. Everything was tig welded.....

Yeah, more sculpting than 'fabrication'. I would call it a piece of artRed Lehr wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 11:03 amThanks Joe. Time wise it took around 36-40 hours. If you lived in my town, I would pay a good commission.

To quote one of the guys I watch on YouTube, "metal is like clay", as long as you remember that and if you don't like what you've done you can always start over. I thought about building a hammer form out of Oak but I wanted to try shaping it free handed first and it actually turned out okay.Joe Travers wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2023 11:18 amYeah, more sculpting than 'fabrication'.
