My new 65 Caliente

Post by Loner »

I have always wanted one of these cars I just love the looks of them.
Got this one cheap but it needs some body work on the passengers side.
Rear1/4 panel and front finder are a mess.
Going to need some little body parts also.
I know nothing about these cars other than I can fix it.
Just wondering are the comet parts hard to find?

Thanks,Loner

Nice car!!
Interior parts, some trim and sheet metal can be tough to find. Options are also hard to find.
Drive train and suspension/steering parts are common to 65-66 mustang and 65 falcon/ranchero so easy to find.
Good luck!

Complete or partial floors are made, some patch panels are made,65 [except doors and roof] are a one year car!.ALL new rubber parts are being repopped.Luckily a lot of rubber for a hardtop is available as it is used in 63.5,64 and 65 Falcons and Comets!Trim parts will need to come from another parts car. Google is your friend. I found a number of sites that have parts for our Comets using Google. Also, Roy is correct, there are allot of parts that will interchange with Mustangs and Falcons. Good luck with your car, you will have a ball working on it. Comets are cool.. 8)

I'm located in Mariposa,CA.
I have been learning how to do body work from a guy that has been doing it for 63 years.
He is teaching me the old school ways (no bondo) and I'm having a blast. So body work is not a issue and I get to learn as I fix the car.

The car has sat for 23 years so some things are stuck. The engine turns over by hand.
I'm trying to keep it as stock as I can with a few up grades.
I'm also going to post everything I need for it along with everything that I find wrong so I have a list to go by.
So this is what I need help with.
What do the hub caps look like?
What books manuals do I need?
She has a 200 six in her, is the value cover and air are yellow is that right?
What color is the block?
Not sure I want to change such a stock car but I'm going to ask.Can I put disc and power brakes on the car off of another car? Will they be five lug if so how do I change over the rear end.
Can I put power steering on her? What car would I find the parts off of?
Is that a C4 transmission I'm looking at?
This car is all original and unmolested I'm told the 33,000 miles on the odometer is all it has on it.
Parts I'm going to need-
Front passenger side head light assembly and bezel.
Passenger side Caliente emblem.
The M on the trunk.
Both back up light lenses.
Both bumpers are bent but I can fix them.
Needs new front floor pans.
Needs seats recovered has buckets out of a mustang but I have the original.
Might need new gas tank.
Needs weather striping.
Steering wheel is in bad shape and it is missing horn.
As far as the mechanical stuff I have not tried to start it.
The back passenger side hub is rusted to the brake shoe.
Key is stuck in the ignition
Light switch won't pull out.
No brake pedal at all.
No e brake.
Passenger side door is stuck closed pulled locking rod out of door trying to unlock it.
Well that is it so far.
Going to look for the head light stuff mostly so I can drive it if it runs.

In the morning I'm going to clean the car. Then try and get it running.
If it runs I will tackle the brakes.

Fun times,Loner

Hey Loner, if your gonna try to get it runnin
I would like to suggest a couple of things
Fresh oil, pull the distributor and pre oil while turning it over by hand
put a bit of oil in the cylinders and use something other than the gas tank to pull fuel from.
Good luck
Fred
Edit
reread the post and seen the "dents"
you got some leanin to do
should be fun

Pick up the Ford Shop Manual- 1965 Comet Falcon Mustang. You'll be glad you did.
Engine block/head should be black. Valve cover and air cleaner yellow.
There are 6 cylinder disc brake kits from CSRP- they are 65-66 mustang based. Power booster would need to be after market if you decide to go dual MC/disc. If you stay with single MC drum a stock booster works. They come up on eBay sometimes. If you decide to go 5 lug you'd have to change the rear end to a 63-65 falcon comet ranchero V8 8" rear.
PS kits are available. Contact Chockostang.com for PS.
Should be a C4 trans with your 6.
Good luck!

Took the pressure washer to her today looks much better without the moss.
No points or condenser under the cap.
So not starting it today.
Found four hub caps when I got the trunk open.

The caps I remember on these cars were different I think these are off of a Falcon.

Thanks for the offer Roy I might take you up on it but first I'm going to look at a car about 3 hours from here.
Maybe I can save part of it.
You ever make it to the Turlock swap meet?

Later,Matt

Well those are comet hub caps.
Just can't find them on a 65
Found lots of pictures of them on 64's
Going to go look at a 65 tomorrow for parts the car has the back 1/4 that is crunched on mine.
Don't know if I will need it but I'm going to cut it out anyway.
Found the headlight door at a swap meet on Sunday. Good thing the pot metal on mine was cracked bad.
Don't think it would of ever straitened either.
Still need the Crome cover piece and parts on the light adjusters.
Might be on the one I'm looking at tomorrow.

Sounds as though your coming up with most of what you need.
The metal looks real good on the 1/4,, think I'd spend the time effort and even money to see
if it can be saved.
