Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit???????????????
Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit???????????????
Hi to all! Recently purchased a '64 Comet Caliente Convertible. I wanna change out the front drum for disc. Dearborn Classics has 2 kits, one using existing spindle for $700 and the other using new spindles for $950. Which is better? If i can, should i stick with the original spindles or go for new ones? Does it significantly affect the braking performance, or is it barely noticable? thanks!
Re: Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit???????????????
if you want a bolt in and fairly reasonable, look for a late 70's granada and use those spindles. only a couple of items to contend to. cut a little off the steering stop on the strut rod, relocate the hard brake line a little, and change the tie rod ends. calipers, rotors, and bearing are available at the local parts store and pretty cheap.
might take some looking around to find a set since they are very popular. other than that I don't have any experience withthe aftermarket kits. some of the others may jump in later.
btw, welcome to the site. lots of good info and good people here. also, pictures are almost a necessity here.

Re: Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit???????????????
I have post on a few different threads on this forum that I used a conversion kit from scarebird. It worked great for me. The was around a $200 and I spent another $2-300 on new rotors and calipers and hoses. I like their kit as it uses comon parts on the stock spindles.

This is the kit I used. Factory-type parts, good price. Look for the same seller on Ebay for even cheaper prices.

Re: Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit???????????????
Any route you take is going to cost you $500.00+unless you happen upon a cherry parts car.I have done the Granada-Monarch swap,it worked OK.I did the 4 piston Kelsy-Hayse discs, used on medium sized Ford products,65-66-67 Mustangs,67 Cougars,66-67 Fairlanes and Comets, you can use your V-8 spindles or the spindles from the cars I mentioned but with those you need 67 Cougar outer tie-rod ends.I use a 67 Mustang non-power disc-drum master cylinder with the adjustable brake pedal rod.I prefer the K-H brakes but the Granadas are better than stock drums. The original K-H 4 piston calipers had some issues with the pistons sticking, the new or rebuilt units use a stainless piston to solve that. Re: Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit???????????????
Thanks everyone. That helps a lot. Now i think ill use the stock spindles. Doesnt seem like i need to get new ones if its not gonna make much difference. Plus, it saves me a few hundred bucks.
