66 Pace Car Flag Bracket Info

Post by Sabatona »

Hi guys.

Does anyone have photos of the mounts that Mercury attached to the rear frame rails on the flag equipped pace cars?

My DSO 84 Convertible has what looks like 2 pieces of steel that were welded to the rear frame rails (long wise), but it looks like at some point they were cut/torched off....

Trying to determine if my convertible at some point had the flag holders installed, or if it was possibly something else.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bump....

I have spent hours on line and cannot find a single photo of an original pace car flag mount setup...

Hoping someone here has a flag equipped pace car and can post a photo.

Thanks in advance. Len

Unfortunately I haven't seen one either. The photo I have shows what looks like 1/2" x 1 1/2" flat stock coming from under the bumper and holding the flags. This from an Oct. 2004 Musclecar Enthusiast magazine article. Judging from the size of the steel on that frame rail I'm guessing it's from a homemade trailer hitch.

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking the "flag bracket" history would be much more interesting than the "trailer hitch" one...

I'm checking with the previous owner to see if he cut off whatever it was, or if it was like this when he bought it.

I saw a 66 pace car at Mecum indy 2017, but it was modified so im thinking the flag holders were not original....

Thanks. Len

In 2010 there was an unrestored parade car that sold on ebay. The guys neighbor won it in a raffle at the track in 1966. I shoulda bought the dang thing. It sold for around 11k.
