Hole in the Floor

Post by Rocket989 »

I have to fix the (lousy!!) hole the PO cut out for the old T10 linkage & hump. I was just gonna weld-in a piece of appropriate gauge sheetmetal but any suggestions on the best way would be appreciated! :D :D

first thing I would do is recut the hole to a straight cut square hole . it looks like he used a can opener  . But since it dont show I would just lap a sheet over it & weld it. I wouldn't butt weld it , (if it were my car.) If it was a really nice car I might. I use weld thru primer on lapped welds, to coat the surfaces that get covered up. or if I had any body panel adhesive on hand I might just glue it, which would seam seal it all at the same time. but @ $50 something a tube I would not pay that much to patch that hole.

What he said. ^^^ I've become a fan of the punch and flange tool as well.

I think I would do as John suggests and recut the hole more square, then use a flanging tool on the edge then fab a cover plate to just fit in there. could be sealed and screwed in place. then it would be removable should a person ever need access.

What? That hole is clean compared to some OEM holes I've dealt with....cut with a TORCH,not even close to conforming to any type of pattern. Just kidding,of course, but if it were me,I would make a pattern of the hole out of beer box cardboard to make a patch and butt weld it in,grind it down, make it look good.
Can't help myself....

This one.

Eastwood has one for $60 and I'm sure it's better. I bought the above cheapie. It worked, then it didn't. Took it back and got it replaced. That one still works.

So, you can flange one piece, punch holes in the other and use that hole to weld the piece in.

I have the same flanging tool that Lip Ripper has from HF. Have never used it other than to test it. The need has never come up. Should work though.

That is an ugly hole. There is no wrong way to fix it my preference would be to build a patch to go Over it but I would not use square corners I would use round corners
Only use the brakes to stop and get gas.
