And just like that, ole John has popped the top off of an "authentic" can o' worms... according to Mannel every 1965 289 4v had Gold valve covers and air breather EXCEPT as John notes, the Comet (Yellow) and Comet Cyclone (Argent - Silver) and of course the HiPo's in all models (Chrome).

For the record 1965 - 289 2v on Fairlane, Falcon, and Falcon Sprint were all Gold as was Full Size Ford and Mustang.

So maybe the engine was swapped with any of these, or maybe somebody did a touch up and picked the wrong color (which would be easy to mistake) since just about EVERY other 289 was Gold.

Either way, definitely worth a closer look before plunking down the big cash (if you're banking on originality).

The door data tag looks new. And the Comet tags aren’t re-popped.
Also, it has the correct CA closed emissions air cleaner and oil cap.
Lots of cool details. It’s amazng it’s stayed so original.

Groover I kinda figure the old guy was just tired of the yellow motor. he had it since new & may have always liked the gold ones on the fords better & one day in his later years decided to spiff it up. If you look hard you can see a place where the gold paint was knocked off & yellow showing. right above the 289 2V, above the V is a yellow spot. Looks like he also added the long shaped chrome washers on the V cover bolts. He probably put new V cover gaskets when he painted them & was doing everything possible to reduce a chance of leaks.
But one thing is for sure, he took great care of the car!!! :D

It's had some work done under the hood alright. The (7?) yellow plug wires are obviously not original, looks like a zip tie around the heater hose and vacuum advance hose, and the starter solenoid is blue. So it's had some maintenance changes done to it, but still appears to be in "excellent" condition. Wish mine had a starting point that nice.

If I were in charge of selling it I'd spend a little on new plugs wires-black & some yellow paint for the motor pc.s , & the solenoid color. It is so close to cherry it deserves those things to be more original. Maybe loose the curb feelers

Beautiful car, with a very small amount of cash, and a few hours worth of work, could be made near 100% again. Most of those small items are available through Mac's and other sources. As value goes, the members are right in the ballpark for sure. Who would have guessed that black 65 Cyclone would sell for 56000+ fees recently on Mecum. It was also subject to the eagle eyes here, and improvements could have been made to that car too. Cyclones tend to bring more than Calientes, but if it was loaded with buckets and a stick they can approach similar values. The green interior might be a drawback to me, but obviously somebody liked it! My vote is do the details, ask 20. Take care, Cary

I agree with Cary ask 20K

The car is clean, looking at inside of door seams where the door skin attaches to the inner door frame really clean! Gives me the opinion the rest of car is pretty much rust free, which is huge.

The car sold pretty fast. I had calls from al over the U.S. and even from Germany and New Zealand. The buyer checked out a few key spots and the car and loved how un molested it was. The original owner really loved that car to keep it in that great of condition for so long. I don't think the car ever saw rain as no rust underneath.
