Carshow results.........

Spent last Saturday at a local "all Ford" car show and cane away with a 3rd place in the Mercury class. First place went to. 1964 Comet station wagon, 2nd went to a 1965 Caliente. Fun time, good people. I also met a guy and bought a new hood and trunk for $100 each. No rust, just needs paint.......w...

Re: this beats all !!

It's hard to bust on kids when they aren't working. I have three sons and when I was growing up my two brothers and I worked HARD! I get Social Security statements showing my first payments in were at the age of 8! My family didn't have much and us boys had to work. But today is different. It's next...

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

Would have replaced the 2 row radiator with the 3 row last night if they would sent me one that actually fit my '66 Comet. ARRRRRHHHHHH! Ordered another one from a different company and will be sending this one back. Looks like I might be putting the 2 row back in the car so that I can at least go t...

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

I actually had it at 14 when it overheated and then bumped it down to 12 and finally to 10. Running cool as the other side of the pillow now. I went to the "Coming Out" car show today. I couldn't enter today because I could only stay a couple of hours but I did drive the Comet up to the show and wal...

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

The mystery of the overheating might be solved. I think I had the timing wrong which was making it ping at higher RPMs causing the overheat. I brought it from 12 down to 10 and the overheating is gone. I am still going to put in the 3 core radiator for good measure.

Re: what did you do to your comet today?

Today the '66 got new tail light lenses and by this weekend it will have new rear door seals which should cut down on road noise and drafts.

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

Ron, The motor came my way by accident. My 66 had the original 289 motor in it with 50ish thousand original miles on it. It didn't smoke and ran nice but had a 2 barrel carb and I wanted to jazz it up a bit. Plus, I knew the heads would need redone if I ever wanted to stop putting lead additive into...

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

Oh yes...its hot. Its spewing steam out of the overflow hose like a fire breathing dragon. I'm hoping the larger volume of 3 core will solve the problem.

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

Well, a nice sunny day cruise turned into an engine overheat. Got it home and flushed the system real well. Not sure why it overheated. The only difference than any other cruise with the new motor was that the temp got around 78 degrees today which is about 15-20 degrees warmer than any other day I'...

Re: what did you do to your comet today?

Installed new LED bulbs for the brake lights/turn signals. They worked as running lights but wouldn't flash as a turn signal. I figured it was the flasher fuse wasn't strong enough so I put in a Heavy duty fuse and all works well. The LED make my brake lights just a little bit brighter so hopefully ...

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

Thanks for the kind words. It goes......really well......and it stops...... really well! Now I am concentrating on the handling. Have ordered many new parts to start cleaning up some of the slop in the steering (tie rods, control arms, etc.) Once I have everything in and as close to aligned as I can...

Re: Hi Performance 289 Install in '66 complete

I was a Jet Engine mechanic in the Navy for 23 years and have always seemed to have a wrench in my hand my entire life. I'm not afraid of tearing anything apart and figuring out how it works. I know tools and I can read a manual so I consider myself pretty dangerous. The bottom photo shows the Comet...

Re: Dual exhaust with power steering?

Ron, Mine might be made of something a little more durable because I have no movement at all. It is flush tight to the frame and not budging at all. I also looked the system over real good and it occurred to me that this is just an "assist" to my steering and a complete bracket failure would not cau...

Re: Dual exhaust with power steering?

Ron,
I haven't noticed any looseness in the steering but I will definitely get under the car this weekend and see if there is any movement. That is totally not cool to have that flexing like that, that could be a very bad day!

Re: 64 Comet on Whidbey Island

Congrats on the new ride....it looks great! Now you just need to find yourself a 289 to drop under the hood, some new disc brakes for the front to bring it to a halt, and some sweet dual exhaust out the back to scare small animals and old people!
