Re: Alternator conversion wiring.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED !! And I didn't need the extra wire. In fact, the final solution was surprisingly simple. I had initially approached it by trying to figure out how the alternator was wired. Ended up using the 65 wiring and worked backwards from the ammeter. One wire went directly to the solenoi...

Re: Alternator conversion wiring.

I found this diagram for a 65 with ammeter AND alternator. Most of the wire colors didn't change much in 1 year. Followed it the best I could, and it's charging now ! Ammeter still doesn't work, but I have an idea on that as soon as I get more 10 gauge.

Re: Alternator conversion wiring.

Not sure if this information is still needed but I thought I would post this just in case someone wants it. This is for installing a Ford style alternator not a “Brand X” style. Re: '65 Fuel Sending Unit

That one looks like my option B and/or C. I take it that you have found it works fine? Actually, the car hasn't made it outside of the garage yet. I've put 2-3 gal in it to get it going, but it barely moves the needle. Still working on trying to get the ammeter to work. Hopefully in the next week.

Re: Antenna

I checked 9 ads and a brochure for 65 Comets at the ahpsoc.org website, and none of them had an antenna. As I understand it, like outside mirrors, radios (and antennas) were commonly dealer installed options, and they weren't always the same. e.g. I've read the dealers installed both round and squar...

Re: '65 Fuel Sending Unit

I usually check out Rock Auto first for compatability (and good prices) but they are out of stock on this one. I got one for my 64 Caliente from Ebay, and it was shown as for 64-65 only; which jives with what I've read elsewhere. It matched the one that came out of my 20 gal tank. Here's the link: h...

Re: Alternator conversion wiring.

There is a great video on Youtube that explains what needs to be done to the wiring to convert from generator to alternator . The first half of the video explains what each does. The second half is where he uses wiring diagrams to explain where the wires go and how to change them.I'm still running ...

Re: Alternator conversion wiring.

Wish I could help! Did this when I put the 351C in my 64 in the 70s but dont remember exactly what to do. It was really simple though, think a couple of wires on the regulator were tied together and then to Alt and heavy wire from gen to alt. I'll look at what is in my Comet now but seems to me I c...

Alternator conversion wiring.

I've been searching for weeks, and haven't found a definitive diagram for converting my 64 Caliente 289 to an alternator. As other owners know, it has an ammeter, and everything I find (or have been given) is for a car with a generator light. They aren't wired the same ! PLUS. I don't know for sure ...

Fan shroud gap

So I found a Dynacorn V8 fan shroud on sale and picked it up thinking it won't hurt, and probably should help; even tho I haven't even fired the engine up yet. I have a 3 core brass replacement radiator that matches the 3 core that came with the car (64 Caliente), and ordered the 3 core brackets. It...

Re: Intermediate motor mount I.D.

Man those early mounts can be a pain. Take a look at this Dearborn ad https://www.dearbornclassics.com/intermediate-engine-frame-mounts-v8-falcon-fairlane-ranchero-comet-1963-1965.html It shows the right side intermediate mount. Looks like the right side intermediate mount has the offset hole towar...

Intermediate motor mount I.D.

IMG_2108.JPG So when I took the "old" 289 out, I separated the right and left setups, in case I used them again. When I discovered one of them was cracked, I ordered two new ones, and lost track of which intermediate mount went where. Putting the new mounts on, and of course, the intermediates have...

This will probably be good info to have if I have to tear apart the 67 Fairlane column shift in my Model A. Thanks again.

Re: 64 a/t column shifter stuck

It appears to be. The engine/trans is still out, so the linkage is not hooked up. There is no detent type of stop between N, D2, & D1, but there is for R, P, & L. I assume the transmission itself provides the resistance for those gears. There are no gaps with the housing/collar connection.
