Following this fella on FB. He has put up several pics of this car in its road racing days after the Safari.
The pics are poor quality but his ability and enthusiasm show through in some of the in race pics.

Very cool, Fred!
Was wondering if there were any’64 rally cars that had survived when the auction went up for the Endurance car. Fogs lights, mud tires with flaps, spotlights…looks like this one has been stripped of the backroad gear.

Dont think I've ever heard/read of a Safari survivor in any condition.
Re: One of the East Africa Comets
I saw what was touted as being a real safari Comet at the vintage races held at Luguna Seca racetrack in Monterey California a few years ago. The owner races it quite often at that track, he had all kinds of documentation on display in his pit area. I have pictures of it, I will look for them and post them here.

I found a few pictures from when I saw the Comet in California. I cannot remember what year this was because I was there a couple of times in the 2000’teens. The #81 car is the safari car, the other car is a clone I believe. The documents are from the 81 car.

Years ago I was really into those cars. Still have these pictures saved on my abandoned photobucket account.
1965 Mercury Cyclone former drag car, 1971 Boss 351 engine, 4 speed, ladder bars, etc. Now returned to a street car.

Didn't know they were returned to Stroppe and put back on the track. How cool is that? Those cars had to take a total beat down when they rally raced. The build sheet is cherry on top. Thanks for posting
Just noticed, same paint scheme as the Sox & Martin drag car.

Jim thanks for posting the pics. I of course have seen pics of that road racer before but never realized or knew about the Safari cars.
Im pretty sure seeing pics of that car is what prompted me to create the rear wheel openings I now have.

Your B/W pic appears to be the same colors, Fred. Prompted Rocket to paint his car, I presume.
Vividly remember the Gulf Oil orange paint.

Fran Hernandez of Autolite was involved with Mercury racing programs in the 60s. His sons run a FB page dedicated to all his endeavors including some East African Safari race action.
