Here's a pic of mine. My car was restored in the USA before I imported it so I don't know if the air cleaner is correct or not, but I'm sure one of the knowledgable guys on here will jump on soon and advise one way or the other.
Peter.

Any chrome 14" open cleaner with a 390 hipo decal will suffice as far as I'm concerned. I don't know the thickness of the element but i think it's 2". I'd have to measure mine.

There is one listed on eBay as correct for a 1966 and 67. Does anyone know if this is the correct one for a 1966?

No, they're an open element. Pop is right, OE haas a painted bottom. The OE element is orange and I think the metal on the outside of the element has round holes insted of expanded metal. Just look at any concours photo of a rustang.

I believe Tambo has the right or close to the right air cleaner. The one in the e-Bay add is for a 67. Here is an article from Car Craft, March of 66.

I found a few variations.

67 Mustang 390 air cleaner:

And 66 Comet:

Not sure which one is right, but I think youd be OK with a reproduction 289 Hipo air cleaner with a 390 sticker (like LR stated in a post above).
