Roy's Comet in Muscle Car Review?

Post by JMolloyNH »

Hi Roy,

Is that your 65 Comet on page 61, of the July 08 MCR? The photo was taken at the Knott's Berry Farm All Ford event.

Side bar for the picture reads:

Roy Pool has owned this '65 Comet Cyclone since 1967 and originally raced the car. Then, when Roy got married, he returned the car to the street. After Roy's family grew up, he re-converted the Comet for nostalgia drag racing. Roy's Merc now features a 347 stroker engine with a four speed. The street legal car runs 10.80 at 127 mph.

Looks good!!

John;yes that was my Comet. I was surprised to see it,the magazines usually only show the Mustangs at Knotts. The Comet turn out this year was weak, only four showed,a 61,a 64,my 65 and a 67.The caption was off a little,I raced the car until my sons got into sports, then I put it on the street until they left the house, but I am not complaining, any coverage of a Comet is good to see!I started my subscription a couple years back when they did the article on the un-restored 65 Cyclone with a 271 hp setup, good magazine, covers alot of cool muscle cars from the 50's to the 80's. ROY.

Well Roy, I was focused on getting Sassy certified to drive in BC
which was quite a process.
Since I have owned the car since '74 in the same insurance area
and never needed to get it certified, some things got half done.
As well, I didn't care that the backup lights didn't work etc. but
BC wanted everything workin.
I finally got it insured and plated so my focus has been

DRIVIN IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wind resistance from the big head from car show wins is slowing you down! LOL! I have to save the wheelie shots for my computer wall paper.

Judd;I am catching all kinds of B.S. after going two for two!The best part was my competition at both shows were Chevys!!! I am helping a friend build a 65 202,2dr.post into a gasser style ride.He wants to keep the 60's vibe, should be fun,he is gathering parts now hope to start in a month or so.We are using a 48"wide,parallel leaf front axle, probably going to style the traction bars after the old lift bars they used on the A/FX type cars.He is torn between a high winding small block or a F.E..I read your post on the TFFN,go spank those tri-5's!!! Just remember,1st,2nd,then 3rd!!!!! ROY.

Fred;WOW,I didn't know you had such stiff inspections, most cars down here would never make it!!! Here in Calif. we don't have inspections on cars except for smog tests on 76 and newer cars and light trucks. We used to have check points on the road but they stopped that 30 years ago. They should start again, you would not believe the junk you see on the roads!!!Enjoy your Comet while the weather is good. I have never had a problems putting old cars on the road in B.C. Is getting certified something new? I hope to have my 65 on the road next summer.

I moved from Sask. to BC so I had to have an out of Province
inspection done.
It wasn't hard, just lots of work.
They made me raise the car cause they said if I had flat tire
the oil pan would hit the ground before the rim and I would lose
control. (Ever look under a Vette?)
The exhaust ended past the rear end and shot on an angle
out from under the car, but THEY SAID the pipe had to extend
past the sheet metal. So I scabed on a piece of tubing.
It's got backup lights they gotta work! etc etc.
Anyway, I jumped through all the hoops got plates now the pan's
going back rock hunting in the weeds(inside joke), the pipes are
going back the way they were and the backup lights still work, I think, but who cares!

Hey Tweaked, I played your video again, the first 2 songs and
the cruise to the track takes me back to about 1977. That Tbird
looks to be pretty strong. Whats it run?
