gear ratio ?

Post by juddp39532 »

I'm looking to change the rear ratio in my 65 Comet and have question of the ratio I need to use, the 411 rear it had originally was to high for the blown 302 it had originally and being told it was a 430 ratio I changed it to a 456 gear. The 456 gear is to high for the 302 and the 351 it has now and I plan to change to a 411 or 430 ratio. My guestion is what ratio should I use? 65 Comet T5 351W locker slicks street strip car and I plan on a 671 blower in the near future. What effect would an automatic have on my choice? Would the blown 351 that now unblown only makes power to 5500 RPM have the power to use the 411 ratio to full rpm use in the 1/4. The 351 has 9to1 compression and a cam designed for a blower with alluminum 2.05 intake valve heads and long tube headers 2800 lb car.
Thanks!

Which t-5 do you have? The one with a 2.95 first gear or 3.35 first gear.

Boss Cyclone
I have both a Zspec Cobra R and a 94 6Cyl with 93 input shaft thats in it right now both are WC. I think they have both first gear ratios. I'm toying with the automatic idea also?
Thanks!

Z spec t-5 would have a 2.95 first gear. One other question I should have asked is how tall are your tires?

Judd;where have you been?I would say with a 5500 rpm limit to go with the 411.The 430's would get you going quicker but you may run out of steam on the big end.An Automatic, you traitor!!!! ROY.

Judd;we are just giving you a ration of S - - - ! A lot of the guys I know running blowers run a higher gear,3.70 to 4.33,and let the blower pull you on the big end. ROY.

My Dad is running a 29 inch tall M&H tire and a 3.70 gear with a Powerdyne blower. Seems to work good for him. I agree with Roy though that anything in that range should be good, although I would go between 3.70 and 4.11. I am running a 4.56 but my Cleveland is still pulling hard well above 7000 rpms.

P.S. We won't make fun of you to your face if you go automatic! :P

Hey Judd, It is Corky. Are you going to replace just the gear on the current third memeber or purchase a a new third member? The reason I'm asking is that I'm looking for a posi third member 31 spline with a 4.56 gear or 4.11. Great to see your car again and I'm glad you are still having fun racing the old comet. Corky

I'm going to replace the gear on the current unit (28 spline). I plan on using the 4.11 traclock third member I have till the locker rear is done then sell the 4.11 tracklock unit.
