385 series in a '64

Post by C4GY404 »

Has anyone successfully stuck a 385 series in a '64? The Crites stuff should make the room (at least width-wise), I think, but I am more curious about what one might use for engine mounts as I am not very familiar with the 385 type of mount. Yes, exhaust would be another issue, especially headers, but I also wonder if the engine compartment is long enough. If I remember right, the 385 is a couple inches longer and taller than an FE. Just wondering if anyone has given it a shot and if so, what was the outcome?
Wow man, is that a Falcon?

I have not done the swap but the 385 series engine is huge and heavy. Most people I know that have done the swap have gone to a different front end,no shocktowers, some used a straight axle and one used a strut suspension. They are good engines, just HUGE! ROY

Wow, those where kind of hard to look at. :P I prefer a 77 LTD II. Those had a bit of style. :?

Back on subject, my brothers father-in-law has a 65 Falcon drag car with a built 460 in it. He went with a Mustang II front end and completely eliminated the shock towers.

Thanks for the responses, off topic or not! I more or less figured it'd be a major suspension re-configuration (and was hoping not) and so far, the responses indicate that it will.

So here's some more off topic...how about a White Lightning car? If I remember the movie right, they said the car was equipped with a 429, but I also remember it had the rare manual-automatic trans with a floor shifter complete with manual transmission sound, and a column shifter that was recognizible in a few scenes. Yeah, an early to mid-70s LTD like that would be pretty cool. And can be done without reconfiguring the front suspension!

The 385 motor is about 200lbs heavier than a FE. I had a 460 and thought about putting it in my 65. Alot of work or alot of money to do a complete front end. I say do it and share the pics of the build with us. :D
