Fuel Line & AN Fittings

Post by lavron »

I am getting ready to order some fuel line and my fuel pressure regulator, the regulator uses AN fittings, I was looking and there is no AN fittings for 5/16" line (-5AN) would I be better off to get 3/8" line and use -6AN fittings?

Also I assume once I get the flair tool (37 degree) they are no more difficult to flair than any other line, like brake lines? Of course I was looking a aluminum line and a cheap tool (if I can't borrow one from the parts store) I can't see paying a bunch for a flair tool to make 1/2 dozen flairs.

Mike, you don't need a flair tool.Summit has all kinds of AN to hard line fittings. They work really good. Male or female on reg? Third out of 2000+ I looked at was -6 to 5 1/6.That said,3/8 probably would be better.

I noticed you mentioned aluminum line.
Just a point to consider. When I was circle trakin aluminum line was not allowed, I guess cause it tends to crack sooner under vibration.

I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

They are actually -8AN O-ring female ports on the regulator (in and return), the carb ports are 3/8" NPT.

Probably won't be doing much circle tracking :P I am just looking now, I used Ni-Cor (or whatever the nickel copper stuff is called) for the brake lines and it is nice to work with so that is probably what I would use if not aluminum. Just want to get the fuel lines before the tip so I can run them while the car is up.

Like Vicegrip said you can get an adapter AN fitting. Slides right over the end of your hard line and gets tightened down. Good to 250psi. It’s a compression type fitting.
I’m using those on my car as well

I actually just ordered all the rest of the fuel line stuff (regulator, line, fittings) I decided to go from -6an to 5/16" hose barb connections and use a rubber line in between. Summit had a -8AN O-Ring to -6AN male fitting and I ordered a 90 degree fuel filter with -6AN female outlet (the 90 side) and a -6AN male input and then a -6AN to 5/16" hose barb. They had a -8AN O-Ring to 5/16" hose barb for the return line.

I went ahead and ordered 5/16" aluminum fuel line, the fuel pump has 5/16" hose barbs already, I will just run a rubber line from the fuel pickup to the pump and I have a fitting to add to the tank I need to dig out and see how it is threaded I can't remember but shouldn't be a big deal.

The thing I did not buy yet is whatever is going to hook up to the carbs, currently (subject to change) my intension is to plug two of the outputs on the regulator and just use one and then daisy chain the three carbs together, I think I can use banjo fittings like the old hotrodders use on Strombergs but need to check and see what my threads are on my fuel inlets on the Escort carbs, from what I have seen I think they are the same thread pitch (the Escort carbs are made to have the fuel filter screwed into the input port) the only thing about the banjo fittings I don't like is they are expensive around $20 each so $60 for all three (one single outlet and two doubles) they all have 5/16" barb fittings. I can either run a rubber fuel line all the way over to the regulator (most likely) or run a hard line across the firewall and switch to rubber line to the first carb, really it would only be about 18" of hard line at the most so probably best to just keep it rubber and just get 3/8" NPT to 5/16" barb fitting for the regulator (regulator has 3/8" NPT outlets)

Wish I could have calculated this out to be cheaper but I guess it is what it is  :P

BTW, I bought a Airtex fuel pump, it seemed to have good reviews, hopefully it is not a counterfeit one but not sure how you tell.

I guess I am assuming you have a high pressure electric pump since your using a regulator. It's your call but I would use only hard line between the pump and the reg if that is the case.

No it is an AIRTEX E8016S, 2.5-4.5 PSI pump, my understanding is the carbs really like 3# so I am regulating them to that and the bypass regulator is supposed to help with keeping the fuel cool and preventing vapor lock and flooding, I want to give the carbs every opportunity to run at peak pressure.

I know it may seem silly to be going to all this trouble on the six but it is 3 carbs and it they are hard enough to balance in the first place, my triple progressive two barrels is one of the few vanity items I putting on the car, just for fun they really to lend themselves to my budget build mentality but you have to fun sometimes :P
