65 Bump Steer
65 Bump Steer
I drove the Comet a couple hundred miles last weekend. I noticed on big gradual dips it bump steers quite a bit. It’s predictable but still unnerving if you’re not ready for it.
It has all stock suspension and steering except for roller spring perches.
Can this be corrected with an alignment? I’m thinking of adding adjustable strut rods and a vario camber kit to make a home alignment easier (like my 64 track Falcon).
With adjustable strut rods would I need heim jointed LCAs?
Thanks all!
Joe

Also, I have these https://www.rosehillperformanceparts.co ... 7rods.html on my track Falcon. A good alternative to the Opentracker ones above.

Sounds like a plan. do you still have the vario centric kit on the shelf, is that camber plates?? easier on the alignman! ,always a good thing
Hows your uca's ? balljoints?
do the shelby drop? while it's apart?

Re: 65 Bump Steer
Yeah that’s exactly what I’m thinking Johnnie. I still have that vario kit I didn’t use on the Falcon and your Shelby drop template. Building that Falcon kinda opened my mind to modding the Comet
I’m also thinking of adding a Baer Racing bump steer kit. I get zero bump steer on the Falcon with those tie rod ends.
I kind of misstated what the problem is. I was on a highway with about 10 miles of roller coaster like whoopty do’s (I think that’s what they’re called). At the peak of each one the steering wheel would crank to the right. A quick correction to the left kept me straight but at 70mph with oncoming traffic going 70...not fun. So like the opposite of bump steer.

Re: 65 Bump Steer
Think I'd spend time inspecting everything.
As I remember your car is quite high in the front maybe cresting those little rises takes the suspension beyond
a limit of something, causing binding of a part?
Maybe a worn part is showing under that stretch,,,?
Just ideas.

Re: 65 Bump Steer
There was a long stretch like that we used to take when we were kiddos because it was a pretty wild ride. If the crest of the road is short, I'm betting you are getting this just after you top the crest? We were playing roller-coaster in my first car, a '62 Galaxie. At higher speeds, the old suspensions unload and load suddenly. It's a trip and loads of fun Used to drive my Mom nuts.comethead wrote: ↑Fri Mar 12, 2021 12:25 amI kind of misstated what the problem is. Haha! Yeah that’s when it happened just after the crest...my boy didn’t mind he was having a blast!
Hey Fred my front suspension is pretty new. About 10k miles since the rebuild. I think the KYB GR2 shocks don’t help. They’re pretty mushy. Maybe allowing too much travel at the top.
Either way I’m gonna tear it apart and make it better... someday. I could lower it like Sassy? Nah

Re: 65 Bump Steer
had those shocks on mine & they actually rode better than these kyb gas a justs that I have now but when i went thru the gears at wot & let off & it was all mushy floating around with that uncertain feeling until it was slowed back down quite a bit.

Re: 65 Bump Steer
My car does the same shifting at high speeds, not WOT. Front dips when you lift and shift. Pulls up hard under acceleration.
WOT gets too crazy for me. Tried it once on a 1>2 shift where the road banked, all I needed to know.

Re: 65 Bump Steer
That’s exactly what I feel at times. Maybe time for stiffer shocks.

Circle Tracked this in the early 80s. Held the track record till
thry gave the camaros more rubber!
Motor went up, different pan. The anti roll bar hits the ground then the headers before the pan.
