PVC Valve Redundancy?

Post by Party Doors »

For the valve cover on my 170 there is a hole on the aft end for the PVC valve and from there the line feeds into the base of my carb. BUT there is also ventilated plumbing extending from the oil filler cap to the air filter housing. Do I really need both lines? Aren't they both doing the same thing? I would like to eliminate the later one.

You really don't need the hose to the air cleaner, but make sure you replace the oil filler cap with a vented one. The Pvc valve is not needed either as long as you have a vented cap on your valve cover. I use a pvc valve and the closed oil filler cap with the hose to the air cleaner on both my 65 cars. The reason I do is that it keeps your engine compartment a lot cleaner. All 6 cyl. engines have some degree of pressure build up in the valve train assembly and it allows some oil to be vented out in the engine compartment if you don't have the PVC valve and the hose to your air cleaner.

The PCV is a positive crankcase vent,so as the name implys it vents the crankcase. In the years before the 60s, engines were vented to the atmosphere through road draft tubes coming from the crankcase and an open cap with a mesh filter on a valve cover or vent tube. The engine needs to vent crankcase pressure or you will blow seals out, front cover around crank snout first as it is the weakest. The tube going from your oil fill cap to the aircleaner supplies clean air to the engine and the pcv pulls pressure into the intake only under a preset vacumn setting.
