Transmission filter
Transmission filter
I bought a 63 Mercury Comet with a 170 and auto trans. I'm unable to locate the transmission filter/gasket set for this car? What gives? Does anyone know of a source? Thanks!
Re: Transmission filter
Not sure about yours but I think some of those old filters you just cleaned and weren't made to be changed .
Re: Transmission filter
Made to clean and reuse...interesting. I don't remember that feature. I will certainly drop the pan and investigate. That may be why nobody seems to have one. I've tried Rock Auto, Parts Geek, Melvin's, MAC's, Carpenter, Falcon Enterprises, and a couple others. I found the correct gasket at Melvin's.
My car has the 2 speed Mercomatic with aluminum case, 14 bolts. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Transmission filter
The '63 service manual refers back to '62 manual. It states to clean the screen, re-install w/ new pan gasket.
I've never worked on a two-speed but have changed screens on several C-4s.

Here's the gasket. FILTER is Cleanable only on the 2 speed mercomatic

Re: Transmission filter
Thanks everyone, I ordered a pan gasket. My old Motors Repair Manual did state to remove and clean the filter. That mystery solved. Now, What fluid to use?! I've been checking on line and get mixed results. Seems in 63 they used a whale oil base M2C-33D. This seems to translate to type A. Later in the 60's after whale oil was outlawed, type F showed up. So do I use type A? Type F? I'm reasonably sure this transmission was never rebuilt.
