Hello/help and advice

Post by bstev05 »

Hi All
I am new to the group, but not new to the classic car world. I just acquired a 64 comet caliente 4 door. While the 4 door isnst everyones choice its what I wanted to build. It has the factory 260 v8 and I am swapping it with a 302 blue print engine. My big questions are will the factory c4 trans work with the 302. I have seen that the trans is a 5 bolt main and the 302 I am ordering is a 4 bolt main engine if it wont work are there any suggestions. Also with little clearance in the engine bay what is the best headers. Any advice is help full. Also the car came with red leather and front seat is bench. I want to replace the bench with buckets any info on where to get them.

Welcome aboard! :D Not sure I understand your question about the trans being a 5 bolt "main" and the 302 being a 4 bolt "main". :? The 260 would have a 5 bolt bell housing and the 302 would be a 6 bolt bell, so your C4 wouldn't be a direct bolt-up.

According to what I read the 260 has a 5 bolt and I know the new engine I bought says its a 4 bolt main. Maybe I am missing something. If the stock trans wont work with the 302 can you point me in the direction of what will work

First off WELCOME!!
If the trans is original to the car, a 64 it won't work with the new engine. The 302 comes with a 6 bolt belhousing bolt pattern and you will need a 65 or later small block trans behind it.
The C4 is a popular choice.
I'd rather do it myself if it's done right or not,,,isn't that what hotrodding is all about

I think you're confusing the bolt pattern for the crankshaft on the 302 with the bell housing bolt pattern on the 260. The BluePrint 302 uses 4-bolt main bearings on the crankshaft, but it will have a 6-bolt bell housing pattern. The bell housing pattern is what determines which trans you can use, and in 64 Ford used a 5-bolt pattern on their small blocks. They changed to 6 bolts in 65, so your 64 trans won't fit your new engine.

Fred hit on it (Sassy)

Only four bolt main 302 made was a Boss or HP aftermarket block. If that's the case, I'd use a racing C4.

Welcome on! :D :D Like everyone said the bellhousings bolts patterns are different but your old trans wouldn't last long behind that motor. A beefed up trans is what you need for that motor. here are a couple, but many venders may have them & I would call before I ordered anything that big & expensive to make sure to be sure everything jives with your setup.
here is a c4 but with no bell,flexplate or converter;

Even though it would be a little more work,you may have to make room in the tunnel because it is bigger but an aod would have an extra gear, it's an overdrive trans & would be much better for the highway & better gas millage. also the bell is integrated so it would save the expense of a bell but you still would need a torque converter. But its a grand cheaper which is weird to me it was a grand or more higher than a c4 15 years ago when I was shopping for one.
