Hey guys, my name is Cristian and this is my first post...
Been looking around for a little bit, and I have decided to finally join in. Props to pop and mike, seems like y’all are some awesome people.
Starting off, I am the proud owner of a 1962 Mercury Comet S-22. It is my first car, I bought it at the age of 14 and been having a mechanic to get it working (the people who sold it to me had it idling bad, and my dad thought it would be best if someone more professional took a look at it) But now I feel stubborn enough to work on it on my own. With that being said I have some things in mind, I am planning to soon change breaks, front shocks, and tires. I am looking into a possible disk brake conversion kit but I’m not sure where to find a definite one. The car has a 170 inline 6 with a Ford o mautic sadly): in the future I want to change it into a small block. In the meanwhile, I am just working with what I can since money has been limited for a bit. Probably will do it while in college or if possible next year.
Now I do have a some questions, my comet tops about 55 mph before starting to heat up. I believed that they could cruise at around 70 mph, what is the most that I could get out of it, and how?

CHRISTAN,,you are not near the fan of POP that I am of you,,,your plans for your furure build on your comet is spot on !!! take care of that 170 and it will serve you well,,,POP has owned a couple of them and drove em in the ground,,they are tough,,but not no where near a hot rod,,,so don't treat it as one !!! learn to work on it yourself,but never back up on asking for advice or help..this forum will be a GOD SEND !!!Most of us are over the hill. to a point ..it is a pure delight to have someone your age on here....you are the future of this forum and the ones like you that are coming....thank you....POP ps I bet that 170 is humming at 55,,,how low geared is it ?? but take in that car was built for the condition of yrs gone by....

I just took my 170 out a couple of years ago, it is stowed in the back of the shed awaiting something else to put it in.

Pops is right the 170 will serve you well and easy to work on but parts might get a little hard to find but there are sources (a lot of things interchange with other motors).Just find the V8 stuff if you are going to do an engine swap eventually, not sure if '62s hold true to what was in '64 but there are several things you can put on by getting the spindles, rotors and calipers off of Granada, Maverick or Mustang some of the steering linkage may need to be changed as well.
The early model guys on here will have an idea.

I’m not quite sure pops I quite get “how low geared is the car”. I’d you could shoot me an explanation, then I’d be glad to respond. I am quite the newbie with some aspects. Hot roding a 6 sure sounds like an interesting think, I’ve thought about it but I’m not quite sure where to get started apart from throwing a Webber on it and changing a few other aspects of it. Thanks for the advice and support from the both of you, it sure gets me motivated to wrench on the car.

It looks like a nice one.
I am not encouraging anyone to hot rod a six, it is not that easy, a small block is much easier especially at finding help
Just do a little at a time so you can keep driving it.

That's a good lookin' Comet. You can determine the rear axle gear ratio from the patent plate on the inside edge of the driver's door. Here's how to translate it:
