Loman's White 65 project
Loman's White 65 project
I was looking around in my shed, and after I moved a bunch of crap I found this car tucked away in the corner. Does this count as a barn find? This is the car that I bought as a parts car years ago that had been rearended. I welded on a new back end on the car a while back and then shoved it in the corner to work on the race cars. Well I decided to start working on my grocery (beer) getter again. I had an extra 289 laying around that I got from a friend when he swapped it for Windsor in his Comet. The crew chief took the timing cover and oil pan off of it a long time ago when we first got the motor and it has been laying around ever since. It was a running motor when it was removed.

Re: Loman's White 65 project
The motor is just a 2 bbl motor. Upon disassembly, I found out it has been bored .030 and the crank has been turned and had undersized bearings in it. There wasn't any lip at the top of the cylinders either. All the bearings were in good shape, so we figured there wasn't many miles on the rebuild. So we reassembled the bottom end. We then disassembled the heads and the valves looked good so we lapped them and reassembled. We looked at the cam but couldn't find any markings on it to try to figure out what it is but since everything else was good we put the same cam back in as well.

Next was to pull the old 289 and trans out of the white car. There was so much crud on the transmission and after some scraping with a putty knife I had a discovery. Looks like the trans was replaced at one time.

Now we're talking
I think you said this was just going to be a Comet to drive not race?
Looking forward to seeing what you do.

Mike, you are right. Just a simple grocery getter. I just want something to drive on the street occasionaly. I'm using the KISS plan. Keep It Simple Stupid.
Re: Loman's White 65 project
Tonight I cleaned up the intake with a wire wheel and scotchbrite. Then I removed the broken stud in the exhaust manifold that held the heat tube that goes up to the intake. I didn't think I was going to be able to get it out but I got lucky. I drilled it out to a little over a 1/4" then tried an EZ out to no avail. So I drilled it out one more size bigger. Then the 5/16 tap did the trick.

Re: Loman's White 65 project
I'm not worried about numbers matching, but what is the difference in these 2 manifold part #'s? Which one belongs on the Comet?

You can never have to much cranial stimulus fluid. Ok, maybe you can. It might have happened to me once or twice.Jims65cyclone wrote: ↑Thu Aug 06, 2020 9:48 pmIs that a can of cranial stimulus fluid in the koozy?

Re: Loman's White 65 project
Finally got my timing chain set after 3 weeks of screwing around. Also, bought a battery tray that came in.
Re: Loman's White 65 project
Nothing to exciting, but I installed timing chain and cover. Hammered a dent out of oil pan then installed. And finished off night by putting intake manifold on. Getting close to rAttle can time for the motor
