1960 Comet Project
1960 Comet Project
Hi all. I finally found my 1960 Comet from a state away and a 10+ hour trip up North of me. I'm excited to learn more about the cars and get this thing going. Currently it has no spark, so I'm going to check the points today. The body is solid besides the front drivers floor pan, which is pretty good besides the hole. Interior was all reupholstered by a previous owner and is in excellent condition (with some cleaning required). It's complete minus the radio knobs (anyone got any?).
Re: 1960 Comet Project
Super cool Comet, floor pan repair is not that bad a job.
Look forward to hearing about your progress on the car because it looks like it is in really good shape for the age.
See Ya,
Mike
If it hasn't been run in a while I am sure the points will be corroded, it is a good place to start.
I think MACs or C&G Ford or someplace similar I have seen knobs just not sure if they were radio ones.

Cool ride!
Don't see many '60 models these days and I think they are special in their own right.
I get the warm and fuzzies for the old Space Age look and this has it!

Thanks guys! Got it running yesterday, runs great! Next up is to rebuild the carb, install the new fuel line, paint the new fuel tank (guy said original was pretty rusty), and then do the front drivers floor pan. The rest of the car is super solid, quarters, trunk and all. Here's a video!
Not sure if there's a Youtube BB code here so here's the link.

Pulled it out now. Running smoothly and well! Unfortunately, a brake line popped (front right) as I pressed firmly on the pedal Gonna install the lines and new master cylinder as soon as they arrive!

Looking good! Are you going to upgrade to a dual cylinder?
That suicide cylinder almost got me in trouble once.

I'm staying with the original right now. Is it really really bad? How bad is it? I just plan on driving around town on 25-35 mph roads max. No highways.Joe Travers wrote: ↑Thu Dec 24, 2020 12:16 pmLooking good! Are you going to upgrade to a dual cylinder?

Re: 1960 Comet Project
The original single reservoir supplies fluid to all four brakes. If you spring a leak on one, you loose them all. If you switch to a dual reservoir cylinder, you'll have two good brakes if one leaks down. Much, much safer to drive.

Re: 1960 Comet Project
Did you replace all three brake hoses, including the rear hose that feeds both rear wheels? You should check the wheel cylinders on all four wheels for wetness, indicating a leak, too. With the fruit jar single bowl MC, any leak anywhere in the system can mean NO brakes, front or rear. I had a leaking front wheel cylinder on mine back in the spring that I was not aware of until I lost enough fluid that it sucked air into the lines due to a low level in the MC bowl. Started to back out of the garage and the pedal just mushed to floor with no brakes.
