My 64 Comet 404

Post by Johnny Wishbone »

Here's my Comet daily driver. Was a 6 cylinder 2 speed with no second gear...... so since a 6 cylinder 1 speed with a crappy carburetor was no fun to drive, and I work at a machine shop, I decided it was time for a change. First I accidentally stumbled upon a set of early Mustang 4 piston calipers, rotors, pads, bearings hoses, etc. all new and all I had to do was swap my 4 lug drums on his car! A couple hours labor and I was set. Then I bought a 77 Maverick 8 inch with a 2.79:1 gear and stuffed that in with new leaf springs, shackles, shocks and brakes. While I was doing this at home, I was building a mild 302 at the shop and had acquired a 91 AOD from a Mustang and had my buddy Tom checking it out for me. Next, pull the engine and trans and stuff in the 302 and AOD. had to move the engine forward a fuzz to get the trans to clear the tunnel and make a new trans mount, but it fits. The really odd thing is, I have a 64 car, 91 trans, 77 rear axle, 57 Merc speedo cable and aftermarket wheels and my speedo is dead on. I only wish there were something in there from the 80's also. Anyway, been driving it and working on the interior and front end along the way, some ass put VW seats in it and I had to get rid of those. So far in the past 2 weeks, I put in a new headliner, front and rear window gaskets, sunvisors, rear deck, and so far I have a rear seat from a 4 door and a front bench seat from a 65 Mustang, but at least it isn't fricken Volkswagen. Hopefully my other front shock will be here this week and I can do the front springs, shocks and engine cross member. Still a ways to go, but it cruises down the road at 65 mph and 2100 RPM and seems to be getting 20-ish MPG.

The rears are 14x7 with a 3 5/8" backspace and tires are 245/60/14. Not a lot of room under there without hacking it up. I had another set of the same wheels with a 3 1/2" backspace and 235/60/14's and they rubbed. I can just get the tip of my index finger between the tire and the body on both sides now.

Hey thanks guys! I love that little car, got it running in early November 2011, so it's been on the road for a little over a year, and I have put about 6000 miles on it so far. That is saying a lot since I live 4 tenths of a mile from work, and I have 4 other cars I drive....
