‘64 Falcon Track Project
Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Hello all!
So to address the issue of fuel cutting out in a hard turn I looked to the carb first. Cleaned it all out and changed floats to Quick Fuel “Road Race” floats. A little more angle on the ends to help keep the needle/seat open when the fuel sloshes up to the sides of the bowls.
I also changed the bowls to larger Holley XP bowls. They’re bigger to hold mo’gas and have internal baffles to keep the gas where it needs to be. They also have a cool drain plug
Pics-
XP. Fuel bowl. Bigger better faster shinier low drag high lift internally baffled.

QFT road race float(right side). They add around 20.52hp

Bowls and floats installed. Needed to install a longer fuel line too

I have to drain the fuel cell to get access to the cells “surge box” where the fuel pickup is. It’s a polymer box with check valves that keep it filled with gas for the hard turns. I’d like to make sure the check valves are checking and the baffles are baffling before I head to the track in October.
Other than these items I can’t really find any issues with the fuel system to explain the surging. I hope this fixes it.
Joe

Love those Holleys!
Have you ever had your car chassis dyno'd?

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Howdy Fred! No I haven’t. I’d like to as well as getting it weighed. Maybe some day.
I was on the front straight and pulling away from my buddy that has a Falcon as well. His “I’m getting passed-o-meter” thinks I’m getting about 400hp from that little 302 screaming at almost 7000rpm
I really don’t know though.

Hey, Joe!
Just wondering out loud (as usual). What are you gauging this on, besides feel? Fuel pressure or A/F meter?

In a prolonged turn it’ll start bucking and surging. The AFR gauge shoots to way past lean then back to normal.

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Are you running 50cc pumpers?
Happens after you downshift and feather the throttle @ high rpm, yes?

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Holley 650 Classic HP carb comes with 30cc accelerator pumps. The fuel starvation happens in a sustained part throttle high-G turn. Never when I downshift or in a straight line.

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Well dang it I never did a follow up on the fuel starvation issue- Fixed! Not sure if it was the road race floats or the larger bowls or maybe a little of both but it’s fixed. Previous best was 1:46 and that went to 1:44 after the fuel fix back in October
Recently did a 1 day event but I didn’t time it. Just did some hot laps and I think some young kids in BMWs Hondas and VW GTIs learned to have a little respect for old American iron
Seems like a problem has creeped up. The engine used to rev cleanly to 7k rpm but lately it falls flat at 6k. I’ve checked some of the obvious things but everything seems ok.
Still running a dual point Accel. Blue flame coil. 8.5mm wires. Holley 650. New plugs. Removed the rev limiter. Valve clearance ok..Solid lifter cam.
Not sure what else to check for this.
Thanks all!!

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
I would look at Air-fuel? Start with the easy stuff....
Your air cleaner clean? You getting enough fuel volume?
Fuel tank vent clear? Any rubber fuel lines that feel soft?
Any kinks or restrictions in steel fuel line?
Does it just go flat or is it breaking up?
Lou

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
If you continue to have issue you may want to give Patrick @ ProSystems here in Michigan a call. Guy does a heckuva job tailoring carbs to application right out of the box.
1964 Cyclone - 2 Dr / HT - A work in progress...
Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Are you sure the tach is right? spankin ass, faster times, on less rpm?
Have you tried your spare set of points & condensers? or your spare coil?
always nice to rule stuff out.

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Thanks for the ideas Lou! Yeah seems like it starts breaking up at around 6k. Ugh I gotta go through the fuel system again to be sure it’s all good.Lou's Comet wrote: ↑Sat Apr 26, 2025 8:49 amI would look at Air-fuel? Start with the easy stuff....

Right on! Thanks man I’ll keep him in mind if I can’t figure this out.

Re: ‘64 Falcon Track Project
Darn good points Johnnie! You’re right. The car feels fast but I feel like Im driving around that early break up in RPM. Like I know its coming so I’m shifting sooner and making decisions based on that.
So…I’m going to swap out points and coil and any other spares I have and see if the higher revs come back.
BTW I tested the tach with a fancy timing light with RPM read out and it was within like 100 to 200 RPM.
Either way lots of work to do before the next event. I may miss the one coming in May.
Thanks man!!
