1963 S22 V8 347 engine/trans swap questions...

Post by McComet1963 »

1963 S22 engine swap questions...
- Disk brake upgrade done, 347 from 1983 Mustang, 10" flywheel, No bell housing or clutch.

- just over 400hp with Est 350 -380 lbs. torque
- Will need to go hydraulic throw-out bearing. Anyone do this without Hydraulics?
- Need know what 5speed trans will work? T5? - Reliable source for remanufactured?
- What shifter will work with counsel? Special adapter?
- Motor mounts - Kits from Autokrafters for 260/289. - Do these frame pieces mount to the rear or front of the frame?
- Rear gears end come later but probably custom built 9". Narrow just a little with drum brakes.

Should be fun and thanks for any help working through stuff, Pete

POP may not have 450 hp...but I have a very stout 289 with 2x4's and a 4spd with a good gear and have been driving it for over 25 yrs been on 2 power tours and many states and has covered many miles with the factory set up from the factory,,,never the 1st problem....we have a hyd bearing in a 64 comet drag car also,,,with a solid lift 351w and a 4spd and a heck of a gear,,,,again it works like a clock.....pop

Thanks you guys... A follow up question is the mechanical clutch linkage an after market cable and do you have shorty headers?

How are the motor mounts installed... Front like my 6 cyl or to the rear to make more room for the water pimp, etc?

Thanks , Pete

Only header manufacturer I've found for '63 is Hooker and they are over $600/pair.
The motor mounts on my '63 are bolted to subframe, in line w/ the lower A arms.
I'll post a pic tomorrow, if I can.

I used Sanderson shorties on my 63 with 331. I had to get the Modern Driveline kit to make the factory clutch setup work with the 91 302 block (it doesn't have the boss for the clutch rod). The Hooker long tubes wouldn't fit with the adapter kit. It is always something..... :D

I tried 3 different headers to fit my 64 comet with a t5 transmission. None of them would clear the modern driveline clutch cable . I was very disappointed. I am going to a hydraulic system

Thanks for all the replies.... Being new to Mercury/FORD ( I did own a 61 Falcon with 289, but bought it that way), I need some help with possible oil pans to fit the steering link... I have 65 Mustang steering link and Granada disk brakes.
Lowered the engine into the bay today and found out for sure the 83 mustang oil pan will not fit.

What do you guy suggest? Open for ideas....

Pete

you need a front sump pan to run stock susp.most of the old fords run front sumps. some of the mustang II setups run rear sump I think.

65 mustang centerlink is different ,longer than 65 comets & falcons but all other stang frontend parts are same.

Thanks for the tip... Yes I spent some time last night on the web and must to my chagrin I discovered front sump oil pans are used.... Spent my life with Pontiac and Rambler... embarrassed to say I never thought of a "reversed" oil pan... Life will go on and I am enjoying the Comet tremendously... Installing Modern Driveline front shift and parts... should be a fun ride and is as I drove 2000 miles this year with the 170... lots of thumbs up despite the virus...

Here's the motor mount location for the small-block V8 for '63.
Sorry a bit late but I forgot about it after the first one I took a month ago didn't come out well. I need a lift! :P

My 65 Comet Wagon has a 334 stroker with a Lakewood scattershield and a toploader. i am running a Spec brand Fox body style clutch and pressure plate with a Ford motorsports clutch cable and a home made cable bracket on the clutch pedal and a 2inch extended clutch fork .
Modern Driveline made the mistake of posting a picture of the cable conversion parts on their website. I did have to build a small spacer box on the firewall to get enough adjustment on the cable.
I am running a set of Hedman headers for a 351 swap for a 66 Mustang. The passenger side fit with some minor trimming of the scatter shield lip.
the starter is easy to get to. The driver side had to have 2 of the the tubes cut and remade to clear the firewall and the steering box.
Easy spark plug access with my ProMaxx heads .
The cable works very smooth and it is relative light pressure for a racing clutch. I do have a heat sleeve around the cable just to make sure the cable does not get hot.

Looking at this again, what is the original tranny in the car? Pretty sure tunnel will get a hack for a T-5. Covered the motor mounts on pic in previous post. If you go with stock leaf spring spacing, you have 9 1/2 inches from outside edge of spring to fender well. You're pretty well stuck with 8" tire width without moving the springs inward or fender mod. I wouldn't go 9" on the differential, unless the 8" breaks, JMO. The 8" is pretty tough and a lighter piece to spin. Doesn't rob as much power as a 9". You may not be applying enough torque to break it. YMMV.
