1966 287 oil pan

Post by marschall1 »

Just got a 66 with a 289 and the oil pan gasket is leaking a ton on the front drivers side . The guy I bought it from told me it leaked . Yesterday we fired it up for the 1st time and it leaks BAD . My question is do you have to pull the motor in a 66 , or can I remove the cross member and drop it out . It is a automatic . Thanks

Had a '66 Fairlane 30+ years ago, same car. Been a long time but if memory serves, the crossmember is welded to the subframe. You have to drop the pickup tube from the oil pump and drop it in the pan after you get the pan bolts out to gain clearance to squirrel out the pan from the front. May have to unbolt motor mounts and lift the engine a little to get it past the sway bar. May have to pull the sway bar as a last resort but I can't remember. Too many different cars.
