Expansion tanks are not overflow tanks.

Tell me what 60s Ford cars had stock overflow containers.
The early '60s big block Galaxies had expansion tanks.

Interesting...link below explains the difference between overflow and expansion tanks. Also mentions expansion tanks in Galaxies and Shelby Cobras.

Going to get a bit nerdy here and put my hydraulic engineer hat back on after 5 years retirement.
The article sited is a little confusing concerning the early '60s expansion tank and the design/purpose of it and the later coolant overflow tank. It states the purpose is the same and later contradicts that statement.

The early '60s expansion tank was a precursor to the later recovery system. Early expansion tank and later coolant recovery systems are both designed to provide air cushion for coolant expansion during heat cycles. Both provide additional coolant capacity. Both are vented systems. The difference is the expansion tank allowed circulated coolant and provided more cooling system capacity than the recovery system.

If engine modification is done to require more capacity, best bet is to add recovery system or larger radiator (or both).
