Generator vs. Alternator

Post by Groover »

Can anybody tell me whether a 1964 Comet Caliente Convertible with a 260 cid has a generator or alternator? and if it's a generator how easily can it be switched to an alternator?

HELLO , TAKE A LOOK .. do you have the generator.. big long thing with maybe 3 wires on it.. or a nicer compact looking alternator.. looks like what all the newer cars have.. if you want a alternator.. buy a ( 1 ) wire alternator.. it has a built in regulator.. it is the best setup.. one wire right to the battery.. less trouble..

Thanks Comet Kid. I would, but I don't own the car... yet. Researching before purchase and trying to cover all the bases for what would need to be done/upgraded. I've seen the discussion come up here about how the generator is a source of trouble for many electrical issues, but no clear comments about which years/motors have them. Seems as though 1965 was the year they switched to alternator. Looking for clarity.

Groover;1965 was the first year Ford went to an alternator across the product line. When they switched to the alternator most of the electrical system also changed, switches, fuse blocks, etc.A generator is fine if you drive the car long distances,it tales longer to charge up a battery,an alternator will recharge a battery in a very short time.ROY.

Hello,

The Generator is the most economical way to go. When I bought my '63 S-22 I bought the generator rebuild kit for less than $50.00
It included bearings/armature/brushes. Works like a charm. Why spend the time and $$ to change what has worked fine for 62 years?

The alternator provides a whiter light instead of the yellow light that you get with the generator.. the 1 wire alternator is the way to go.. if you are mechanically incline .. the generator may be ok.,. you have too many problems with the regulator and wires and no real problenms with the alternator.. I also think that you would get a higher ampaerage output with the alternator setup.. and it looks cleaner.. my choice is the alternator all the way..

Well, now that I've purchased the car, it appears to be a generator and I'll keep it original if at all possible.

What is the preferred alternator to purchase to replace a generator?
(part number, or application?)

I have a '64 with a 200 six.

I think you should stick with the generator.
Ive read that the charge rate at lower rpm's with the genny wasnt very good, so its essential that you keep your engine tuned up and set to the right idle rpm's...especially at night when your running with the lights on.

Keep her original!

Generator has already been rebuilt so she stays as long as she works.
