Steering wheel removal to replace plastic shift indicator

61 4 door. Got the horn parts off, got the large steering wheel bolt off.
shop book is not too helpful, says to use special tool, then doesn't show what the special tool looks like.
Can't see how this sliver plate is held on.

Ok. I will answer my own question. I need a steering wheel puller. Finally figured out picture in shop book.

Hope I'm not opening a can of worms just to replace broken plastic shift indicator.

You can usually find a cheap one at most any parts store like oreillys or autozone. or order one from ebay amazon harborfreight, they are very common. I like this type because you can use them on other things like a balancer;

You may be able to pull and rock it off by hand if it's been off before.

Removed my wheel that way last year a couple times. Just don't crack it (or your skull).

As Joe said you may be able to pull it off by hand. First put the nut back on end of shaft a few threads to stop the steering wheel from hitting you in the face when it pops off. And if you have help they could tap on the end of shaft(with the nut flush) with a hammer while you pull.

Best way is get a cheap steering wheel puller.

Yep, grabbed my puller but couldn't find the bolts so started tugging.
My wheel had been pulled to repaint, so I figured it was doable. IDK if that baby would come off w/o damage otherwise.

... Balancer Remover doubles as Wheel puller but "Special Tool' can be any sturdy flat piece of metal with two holes same (or close) to two puller threads on the steering wheel and two bolts with same threads and a few washers.

Place across the large center nut screwed mostly out and add some pull by screwing down on bar and usually pops loose with a little help.

care is needed assembling signal/horn plate , early car horn circuit passes full B+ rather than just grounding circuit at column.

No need for a puller. Put the main nut back on and leave 1/8" of space (do not tighten down) to protect the threads. Get yourself a 1/2" drift, place it inside the main nut and give it a whack with a hammer. This will release the wheel from the steering shaft.
