Hey Joe why don’t you “contour” the grease cap flat with a hammer? I think there’s enough space behind it for that.

Hey Joe I know how you feel, I patched my trunk floor first then a year or so later re floored it all,put lower quarters on, trunk drops, tubs, framerails moved in,whole nuther tail painel, yea typo but well said so I'll leave it as painel .but I was in the trunk a lot!
But I got an idea, get some of the plastic like the back window of a convertible & sew in a round window so we can see that pretty wheel when you open the trunk :)
but it all looks great ! I like the black hinges!

Thanks, man :)
No need in that  Had to mount spare face down w/ 7" carriage bolt & 4.25" wheel offset.
Went overboard buying a good used Mag for spare but I know it's perfect fit for the car if I ever need it.

The continuing saga to save Mercury Man from ultimate demise......

Image Image

Pan head machine screws digging into the grease cap just about wrecked the retainers. Was thinking about ditching Mercury Man but these things are almost out of production in red. Found one set @ Kentucky Mustang (of all places) and contacted them. They said they had retainer plates, not clips and fit :? I wish I had a Cougar styled-steel wheel to measure. I'm betting they fit those and not Mag 500, as advertised. They are no longer produced but these look pretty cool w/ less maintenance hassle- https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/1 ... themeid=26

Picked up some truss head self-tapping screws @ Ace yesterday after we fixed the wiring in the furnace. Stamped the retainers flat on the press. Will see what happens next.If @ first you don't succeed, try try again....I've about had it w/ repop anything :x

Joe, I'm not familiar with the intricacies of how those caps work. I'm assuming that the metal retaining plate goes on the inside of the rim and clamps the Mercury cap in place. If so, could you turn the retainer plate around so the dish is toward the grease cap and use something (sheet rubber, plastic, ?) to cut a spacer disc the same diameter as the base of the Merc cap to fill the gap that I'm guessing would appear between the Merc cap and wheel? If you used some plexiglass, sprayed black, it might look like it was designed that way.

Here is an old ad for a black set someone gave up on, trying to hack to fit-https://www.2040-parts.com/mercury-cycl ... --i481963/

Wish I could find an old set of the red bulls-eye ones that came on the Monarchs. They don't have a logo, so I guess FoMoCo wasn't going to license a re-pop.

Beautiful daggum wheel! Love them.
Hey Joe could you make a spacer to raise the cap away from the grease cap? Something that’ll fit between the center cap and the wheel. Just a thought.

Not the way these are made, Joe. The sheet metal stamping that attaches to the caps is too tall. If you look @ the hack pics, you can see the problem. Guy was busting the attachment tabs and trying to install the original clips so they would fit Mag 500 like original caps (w/o success).

Picked up a set of original spinners, see if I can restore 'em. They'll fit well and are theft-proof.
Have me a gangsta rod.
